Subject: Why is Reach hated so much?

Okay, I know I have seen this thread before but I really want to hear from you forum warriors why Reach is so bad. Literally every 3/4 threads has someone posting about this being the worst Halo game.

Granted, I think there are alot of things that could have been done differently from the beginning i.e. Bloom (ZB should be implemented across ALL playlists), Armor Lock (and most of the other AA's), should probably be removed from MOST playlists other than Team Slayer. The reason I say this is because TS should be the playlist that highlights all the newest things about the game.

Aside from a few things (all of which can be changed quite easily) I think the overall mechanics of the game are great. The graphics are pretty amazing compared to any other Halo game. The weapon selection could be expanded but who really cares. Halo is about a utility weapon and a few power weapons in my mind and we have that. I played quite a bit of Halo 2, not quite as much as Halo 3 but at least 1k games (I have to admit I was not competitive in that game as I never played with a team and still maintained a 1.4 something KD) and I think Reach is a wonderful game. The MLG playlist is where I go when I want to play the super balanced, super competitive games and when I just want to play regular, not so competitive games I play TS, Super Slayer, ZB Slayer, and BTB.

Basically I feel I have played all the other Halos enough to have a decent opinion and I think this game is pretty fun and does not deserve a lot of the hate it gets from the forum goers. I would like this to be a fairly mature thread with semi-thought out responses. Please do not flame just because I enjoy this game just as much as any of the other Halos and probably more most of the time.

Simply, it is too different to the previous halo games and alienates returning players with features such as fall damage, the new melee system and bloom. There's more but that'd take a long time to write about.

Fall damage was in CE.

My forum account is this'n right here

I wanted a new Halo game.
I got one.
It is much-loved by me.
Haters gonna hate.

Two makes there more than speakers.

It's not that it's a bad game, but it's just not a great Halo game. It took the core aspects of what made Halo, well Halo and mixed it together with a bunch of toys and gimmicks ruining the multiplayer. The campaign was just bad in general.

I'm sorry America is busy helping others in the world and actually making a difference.

Something Canada will never do.

because it's a crappy game

  • 04.05.2012 8:56 AM PDT

Because some people don't understand is that Bungie tried to do something new to keep the franchise from turning into the same thing over and over again like Call of Duty.

Whether you like the differences or not, you can't hate the game for not being just like the other halos. Quit your -blam!-ing, Reach haters, and play some Halo 3.

Who gives a -blam!-, I prefer Halo 3 as well, and loved the Trilogy altogether.

I'm not going to argue with somebody with an explanation of "It's just a crappy game"

Don't fix what ain't broken.

Halo was doing fine the way it was.
Bungie tried to change what worked, and ended up with this pathetic excuse of a "Halo" title.

It's still not a part of the Halo Trilogy, and is obviously more of a separate Halo title.

Halo 4 has more potential if 343i doesn't -blam!- it up.

Should that be an excuse for sub-standard "Halo" standards?

Excuse? They put a -blam!-ton of care into this game. Sure, Campaign, Bloom, and AA's suck. But there's Forge 2.0 which is amazing, Fifefight and Theater brought back, and the biggest Halo matchmaking service yet. I just think people set their standards too high. If the worst of Halo is all THAT, then it compliments the franchise more than brings it down.

Firefight and Theater never went anywhere, and from what I've heard from Theater in Halo 3 worked a lot better. And all of those new implements into the game were what killed it. Sure they tried to work around them to make the game good, but in a way it failed.

Firefight is still fun, and IMO it's the same in both games. Besides that I stand by my opinion, TU was 343i's idea so I don't see how they tried to work around anything.

And oh yeah, the Return of the CE pistol and maps. That was great for Reach.

They managed to bring back some of the classic elements of Halo into Reach, but the way Reach was built it brought difficulties.

True, but it was minor and it didn't completely destroy the game or anything like that. It still worked about half of the time.

Campaign is full of holes and very linear.

Firefight is a "who can get the highest score" game.
It's nothing close to ODST firefight where it was about survival and playing smart.

Forge is nice... but grey everywhere
It took a step forward, but 2 steps back.

Theatre is a downgraded version of H3 theatre.

MM lacks insensitive to win and improve.
MM ranks based on playtime and not personal skill.
MM lacks party restrictions.

Bloom was unnecessary
AAs where a somewhat decent idea yet, poorly implemented

Reach lacks the "everyone starts on equal footing" as well as the "2 man enter battle. The better one leaves, the lesser one is respawning."
2 core fundamentals that made Halo, Halo.

Reach is good, on the condition it's used as the "TO NOT DO" example on the drawing boards.
Outside of that specific condition, it's sub-quality Halo material.

I agree about Campaign.

True, but Arcade Fight is still a blast and good for beginners as well as custom FF settings

Even though too many things are metal grey platforms that doesn't take a way from the levels of customization and epic maps you can make.

I still don't see any changes in Theater.

MM can be competitive, and IDC about the parties and all that. I agree with the Ranking system, Bungie should of at least put in Skill.

Bloom was something new they wanted to try, can't blame them for experimenting and trying to see if it would make the game a little harder. I agree with AA's.

Yes, that actually makes a lot of sense. I think AA's and unbalanced maps ruined that concept.

So I 50% agree with you. I think Reach is great, but yeah, it lost some fire from the other games. I say it should be put on both sides of the drawing board.
