I create an internet game. I give out the ip to my friend and he gets the 'negotiating connection error message' when he tries to join.

I have gone into my router settings and triggered port 2302 with ports range 2302-2303 having a udp connection, chose 'both' and saved settings.

He still cannot connect to me. I use charter broadband. I have no issues at all playing halo on other peoples servers. I'm just trying to set up a 2 man game for training purposes.

Can someone help me troubleshoot it pls? I have a Belkin router and if you give me your email, I can send you a screenie of my router page showing the ports opened to verify that is correct.

Thanks in advance

Are you forwarding the ports to the machine that is acting as the server? Look in your Belkin's manual for Port forwarding or Application forwarding and follow those directions.

I'd like to email you a screenshot if you know this stuff. I'm not totally clear on your question. The manual is vague to me. I was able to forward some ports for a popular file sharing program in the past.

My trigger port is 2302, my public ports are 2302-2303. I made them 'both' UDP and TCP. I am trying to host this game on MY PC. Is that possible or do I need to set up an actual seperate server? This could be my problem. Thanks again for any advise.

you are probably giving him your internal ip address, --only good on networks, give him your external... www.whatismyip.com.. and then add ":2302" to the end, wait either 2302, or 2303, i forget which you give to people, but yeah if you're giving him your internal ip thats why.. your internal ip address is probably something along the lines of "192.168.1.***" or something like that

Go ahead and e-mail to jquinn83@lycos.com but I probably won't get to it until tomorrow or late tonight after the baseball game.

I'll check when I get home. I gave him the ip that the HALO client assinged me when I created the game. It gave me THE ip and a port number given to me by my HALO client which I assume is what I give out. I don't think it matched the ip on my home network.

thanks

I have the same problem with my pc and I too have a belkin router! Thanks for asking that question dude. Know I know that I have to forward the ports on the Router and my PC. Also, you have to give your friend your outside IP or else it won't work. Just google "my IP" or something like that and you should find a website that give you your outside IP.

Best bet is to go to www.portforward.com
It has screenshots for most routers and games, with descriptions of how to set this all up.

Your internet facing IP should be listed on the main page for the Belkin router, and this may change if your ISP gives you DHCP addresses.

Hope this helps,

Adduxi .

Igg,
I'm going to try a couple of more things before I email you the configs. They look alright but my interface to my router is newer than the examples on the portforward site. One thing I did read is that I need to set up a static ip in windows to forward. I have yet to do that step. that's tonight. Unfortunately, I only have one friend I know who has Halo so I need him everytime to see if he can sign into my server when I create it. I get to test it like once a night...arghh.

Check the ports, the routers, etc.

If all else fails, there's also the leaf blower.
