Alrighty...im going to do my best to cover everything i can, but I'll probably forget some stuff. I, for one support the "humans are genetic offshoots of the Forerunner" theory. This would explain (partially at least) why Halo has Earth normal gravity and an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere, and, while I'm not entirly sure of 343's origins, perhaps the reason the marathon symbol is only seen on him and not everything else in halo, is because it either didn't hold nearly as much significance to the Forerunner or it was somehow related to to Forerunner robotics systems. And to the person (i'm terrible with names, sorry) who suggested that perhaps threshold could have been a brown dwarf, wouldn't a brown dwarf be brown? After all isn't threshold purple? This may be stepping into super deep water or some analogy to that effect, according to the Wikipedia article that someone linked, a brown dwarf is roughly ~13-75 Jupiter masses, and we have no constant to guage Thresholds size in comparison to other known Brown Dwarves. Also, if it was a brown dwarf, wouldn't it still have rendered Halo uninhabitable due to its very close proximity to Threshold?
I'll try to give my opinions on 343 and other stuff now. I think 343 is the forerunner's 'candidate' to safeguard Halo and the Flood. As for how he knew english, perhaps it was the Forerunners Primary Language. I find that unlikely, due to the fact that here a language can't go like 500 years with no outside contact before it essentially becomes a new language. I think that he simply studied us after we landed and made translation lexicons or whatever to understand and speak english. Also, perhaps english somehow stayed disturbingly similar to the foreunner language despite those 100,000 years or however much it was. Another thing is, why else would 343 say " Human history is it? Oh to hav a record of all of our lost time!" if he was a human robot/A.I., wouldn't he say something more like " Our history...."? Well, thats all I can think of right now.
Great points bri_guy. First off, about the Brown dwarfs. If Threshold
were a brown dwarf, I don't think it would be harmful to the environment
of the ring becuase it wouldn't put off enough radiation. This depends
on the age of the dwarf however, because brown dwarfs lose energy
like any other star. Plus, we don't know what kind of shield Halo has
to protect itself from radiation. Threshold also looks fairly brown in
space.
You've changed my mind on the possiblity of 343 being a human
A.I., but I still don't think Humans are Forerunner.
The reason being is the Control Room. It's referred to as a temple,
but a quick look around the temple gives no impression of Human
worship. I'm not saying that we always believed in God or Allah
or whomever, I'm saying it would be weird for us to worship a
computer.
Look at the layout of the Control Room. It's centered around the
Holographic display of the Halo, and the entire thing is built on
a stepped pyramid. (which is an admittedly human structure. .
or is it?) I just don't see the logic in civilized Humans worshipping
their own creation. (a computer or A.I.)
There's also the question of why the Covenant would fight us if
we were Forerunner.
I'll step out of my opinion for a moment and assume that
Forerunner are humans. The religious undertones of Halo would
explain why Covenant would fight Forerunner.
The Grunts often call you "devil," and in the Cortana transmissions
the Covenant feel that us humans have sinned. If humans were
once deified as Forerunner by the Covenant, then a logical reason
for their anger with us would be if we were "fallen." In another word,
"devils." It kind of parallels the Bible and Lucifer's fall, and if we
take that parallel further, then the "good" Forerunner would be
out there somewhere, and probably wouldn't be too happy to
have a family reunion with us. It does make you wonder if we
were Forerunner, what did we do to "sin" and fall from the grace
of the them?
Again, great points. I'm still hoping that humans aren't Forerunner
because it wouldn't be much of a twist seeing as how the entire
fanbase thinks that humans are Forerunner, but I don't know.
I'm sure Bungie still has plenty of tricks up it's sleeve.
