Why not automatically sort them away from the first few prominent pages?

This would allow activity to increase in other posts or threads. Perhaps a suggestion for the next forums update.

I don't see it. So many are junk posts or repeat offences by different users.

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

Why is there a lock button at all? Every thread should just be deleted instead of locked.

Кланяються мені!

I could be mistaken, but I believe this is to prevent confusion. If a thread just vanishes those that were discussing it may further spam the forum with question on where the thread went.

Also for those who aren't so wise to the rules can see locked threads, and learn what types of discussion are allowed and which ones are spam or off topic.

Some solid reasons there, guess I just prefer locked to go away.

When I grow up I want to be bitter and spiteful.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"

I tend to find the locked threads more interesting.

I feel unlocked threads should be automatically sorted away.

Who the hell do you think I am?

I use this one forum where a majority of the locked threads go to another forum called the "Trash Bin", you can't post there or make threads, but you can look at all the locked threads put there from the other forums.

I don't know if that's a good idea, but just something I thought of.

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

It's a tradition.

I heard that it was Recon who invented pillory and locking threads.

They are automatically moved away from the first few pages. By other posts.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

How would one define gray areas without easily accessible examples?

Telling someone to look for them would be an obvious, but then we wouldn't be given consistent examples of gray areas. We would have to force ourselves to learn what is ok, and what isn't (since most don't even read the CoC & ToU).

While activity would seem to increase; bans, warnings, & locks would likely quickly follow.

That is probaly best guess as to why threads are locked and not deleted.

Also, if you read an entire locked thread, sometimes the Mod who locks it will post the reason they locked the thread.

This, but Achronos generally frowns upon it.

I like to read old locked threads once in a while. Just to look back.

Not all locked threads are locked because they broke the rules. Many still contain very useful information.

In fact, there are plenty of threads that were locked only because of the last few post were off topic, but there may have been a perfectly useful volley just before.

I don't know for sure, but I would say they have a way of completely removing a thread if they have to. But, for the most part, they like to keep the thread, and just kill it with a lock, and/or remove post in it that they don't want to leave up.

Key

Because then we wouldn't have the "Words you can't say" thread.

That's literally the only reason.

It stands as a monument to all your sins, and it could hold some good information, even after locked.
