We have been raised for combat...
We carry our banner to our fights...
Alone we are a menace, together we are a threat...
Born to raise hell, live to drop back in it...
Never retreat, never surrender... we are spartans.
Please read everything CAREFULLY before jumping into a conclusion, if you don't care about the timeline of events just skip to the second line.
BARE NOTE: I know I'm submiting myself to a lot of hate by posting this but I'm sorry if anyone gets offended.
This is JUST my opinion on the matter.
---------------------------------------------------------------
What happened is simple: when Halo Combat evolved came out the idea of online gaming with other players was a bit off.
When Halo 2 came out, people could not only play with other people through the internet, they could talk with them now. This form of social paved way for a more friendlier enviroment, the community was more into having fun, the skill factor wasn't as important. It could tell who was good and who wasn't as good and such.
Then came Halo 3. The community got... more immature, so much that K/D acquiring and skill level was ALL that matter for the competitive community. Which created a somewhat hostile enviroment.
Skill trumped Fun, making what could be a fun little enviroment into a kill-farming, K/D-hunting community.
The aspect of everyone enjoying the game the way they liked it was being overlooked and anyone who enjoyed doing what they liked how they liked it was being seen as a "noob" and "poorly skilled" gameplay.
Halo ODST.... not much can be added.
Halo reach.... came promoting a more social, more randomized gameplay with mechanics that wasn't existing in previous Halo's. This was, for the competitive community, a let down. Skill and victory was all that they cared about (for the most part, some had other and more valid reasons) and as such, it looked at Reach as "the black sheep".
The game style of Reach also threaten the gameplay of more traditional Halo gamers, which 'caused some to leave the game.
---------------------------------------------------------------
As it can be seen: as competiveness goes up, social activity goes down. Making "fun for doing things anyway without having a set of reasons why it's noob tactics" into a "You aren't a 50, you have no say in this./ Oh, playing social and have low skill? NOOB!" game style.
The rise in the rivalry between COD and Halo also had it's affects, making people hate a game for simply forgetting that other games besides COD have those features. Perhaps not all but the point stands.
Note of interest: I'm not saying this is all the community is reduced to or all of the competitive players are like this (only the really over-competitive) or every bit of something new being hated is related to the fact it exists in Cod. This, however, is the major points that I see commun in the forums.
Long story short: The rise of over competitive gaming brought a more hostile gamming activity that followed the rise of the younger generations joining the games. The hate for another game also made it harder for accepting new gamestyles to enter the game.
