I think the faster matching times that come from not having a ranking system have created the illusion that Reach is more popular, along with an influx of kids playing FF.and more people have a 360 now than back in the Halo 2/3 days.
Not only that, but the demographic that is buying them has shifted. It used to be that Xbox was for older players, Sony was the mid to older range, and Nintendo had the youngest players. Now every console is targeting every demographic, and the games are all turning into a blend designed to appeal to such a wide range of players that there's no definition between an E rated game and an M rated game. Used to be I could expect a more interesting and mature plot from a more mature game. Now the plot in just about every game seems like it's aimed at a 14 year old. Game companies have figured out that ratings don't restrict audiences. Just means every game is -blam!-, and designed for idiot children. Really annoying.
