Subject: Cortana by Halo 6?

Since there has been a new trilogy announced to be made by 343, assuming Cortana will have gone rampant by that time, what will this mean?

Will Chief have a new AI? Will she overcome her rampant stage? Will Chief not make it to Halo 6? I am not as keen to the knowledge of this all as you that frequent this Forum may be, so, help me out! (This is about the Halo timeline in general, not some commentary on the 3 new Halos)

Thoughts? Ideas?

Positive vibes.

I have no idea.

I certainly hope Master Chief and Cortana do not break up (lol).

"Where ere thou hast been, here or in yon world manifest? Canst thou tell what is, or what was, or what is to come? No thing shall last. Yet there are some things that will never change. History is written in blood, yet are battles really lost on the battlefield? Canst thou tell me where thou comest, and where thou goest, and what is, or what was, or what will be? For everything remains, AS IT NEVER WAS."

Let's wait until the end of Halo 4 and Halo 5 to start predicting that.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

They'll kill her off in one of the dramatic conclusions of Halo 4,5 or 6.

However some canon sheilding means she would find another way to live, maybe through forerunner tech or something. She'll still exist somewhere in the Halo universe.

...And when i am standing there, watching as the slingshot is cranked back into the shadows, a smile will bestow upon my face as I softly whisper one word..."blam...."

Check out my Youtube Channel!

cortana will either die at the end of the new trilogy (or even the end of halo 4 now that i think about it) or they will find some forerunner tech to boost her life.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

A main theme in at least Halo 4 will be Cortana and her becoming rampant and how the chief deals with it, how to try and get Cortana better. Now what I would think is, her becoming rampant could play a role throughout the trilogy. Maybe in Halo 4, they find someway to prolong her life...

I will own everyone in Halo: Reach

Either she will "die" or will be translated to some Forerunner technology so she will be still "alive".

Warning, my theory about rampancy, wall of text inbound.

Since the new trilogy is meant to go into more depth with master chiefs character, having; for the lack of better terms, his better half becoming erratic and eventually rampant will give chief a new level of isolation and oppurtunity for development. Cortana has always been his guiding hand, and therefore removing that will cause self inflection causing him to find out who he truly is in order to move on. At first he stumbles; the subplot for halo 4 is trying to find technology that can stall or end rampancy (it must exist, spark has lasted millenia.). This could devolve into an obsession by halo 5 as chief begins to sacrifice mission success and his own well being in pursuit of leads, in essence driving him into rampancy of his own making; saved only by the embers of cortana's sanity telling him to get a grip of himself and remember who he was; the guy that got blam done and only needed a pistol to do it. But there he was, just losing all the progress in whatever plot the new trilogy will hold because he thought he found something that could save cortana, only to revel in yet another dead end. For one final time, chief relied an Cortana's advice. Cortana knew the only way for chief to regain his steely resolve and move on was to unshackle him from her. In the end of halo 5, Cortana asks for chief to terminate her, but he could not do it. Halo 5 ends with Chief leaving cortana on an isolated monitor so that he could free himself and pick up the shattered pieces of his goals, without terminating his closest ally. It was the only way chief could feel human. Halo 6 is about that revelation; he is human, not machine. Halo 6 is true isolation, alone, on a guerilla war to end the tyranny of the ancient evil. His only company is his inner monologue as he breaks apart and rebuilds himself into the true john, he thinks of his pre-spartan infancy; fleeting memories of ma and pa, only to be taken over by the blood-rage of his training and the faces of his victims. He fights back and begins to regain his humanity; hes not the killing machine, hes John *insert last name*. He had finally moved on, satisfied with himself. With ideas of retirement in his golden years he, with almost ease, eliminates the uncannily inhuman ancient evil. But he still has one more hurdle to face. Cortana has been waiting, fully rampant now. She has become something unrecognizable, filled with rage now for John "abandoning" her. In a heavy debate John lashes back at cortana's verbal abuse of criticizing him as a monster, a killer, a machine, and heartless with the acknowledgement of what hes done but along with his revelation of who he is. John no longer needs the presence or idea of cortana to make him feel needed and real, because he became real to himself. Chief says goodbye and terminates cortana. He loses the armor and lays down, and looks up and the stars and the helment stays in the grass this time.

Thats my bs theory anyway, came up with that on the spot and probably completely off, but if was fun to write.

I could honestly see her pulling a MB on humanity. Then comming back out of rampancy before the war (with the new enemy) is over.

I think Chief will have to find some sort of Forerunner update that prolongs her AI life span. Which backfires some how.

I hope she goes rampant, and turns a little durandalish- Does lots of crazy things that you can't quite tell the motivation or good/evilness of, but works towards a much greater plan.

or if we go by the example set by h1/2/3, personality will remin unchanged but her figure will just slowly turn into a hyper-hourglass corset with bosoms the size of basketballs. ;D

It only takes a simple question to change everything.

I'm guessing that in one of the games you try to find out how to keep Cortana from going rampant. Maybe you will find forerunner technology to help her. I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of Halo 4. I think that she will be a part of the story as long as Chief is.

I feel like this is a very real possibility.

But, I hope that Forerunner technology discovered helps prevent Cortana from falling into Rampancy.

Bye.

I'm not too well versed in the details extended canon but maybe forerunner technology extends her operating period by a few years?

It happens to us all.

IMO Chief should've left her in Halo 3.

Then there would never have been the damned Cortana mission.

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Gravemind already sent her rampant.
She has achieved metastability.

I must be the only person in the world who's Halo3 copy had a super easy down syndrome Cortana mission. Because I don't remember that mission being hard at all even on MYTHIC, it was literally a walk in the park on legendary and MYTHIC.

I LOVE HALO! Better than any other game.

But I love Halo 3 and Combat Evolved - never got the chance to play Halo 2 :(

Depends the span of time Halo 4 through 6 will cover. She may not be dead by Halo 6, but close to it.

  • 04.13.2012 6:29 PM PDT

Since its already confirmed that cortana starts going rampant in Halo 4, my best guess would be that cortanta or the chief find some sort of forerunner tech on the legendary planet that saves her from rampancy.
