I will never understand why so many girls seem to need to define themselves by their gender in online gaming (well, I have my theories, but for the sake of giving them the benefit of the doubt, I'll keep those to myself).
For me, choosing a gamertag/username/handle/whatever is about picking something that appeals to me, whether it because it references some piece of fiction that I enjoy, amuses me in some way, just plain sounds cool, whatever.
Never has it occurred to me to reference my gender/ethnicity/etc. That simply does not occur to me when deciding how to identify online. Yet apparently, for a fair number of girls, their gender is their first port of call in self-identification in an essentially anonymous environment. Great, you're female. You and over half of the entire population. Would you like a cookie?
