But what if you used cyro for short periods of time?

Like say for example, instead of sleeping you go into cyro for eight hours?

I know that sounds really dumb, but it's something I was wondering about.

If you went into cyro for eight hours every night, then you would be in cyro for 240 hours for a 30 day month, 248 for a 31 day month, and 224/232 hours in February.

So in a year, you would have accumulated around 2920 hours in cyro. That's about 121 days (I'm just using whole numbers here).

So in three years, this number would be 363 days, or just short of one year. So for every three years that pass, you only age about two.

Do you find that useful? Would that even work? Can cyro ever fully replace sleep? I'm just trying to see if this would work at all, or if there are some things that I am missing.

So I am posing the question to you. Could cyro replace sleep and extend an individual's life span?

It's certainly something to think about. Though cryo is apparently fairly unpleasant so I doubt it would be a big hit.

By the way, it's *cryo.

Yeah, I'd imagine people would want to avoid being in cryo as much as possible. I bet cryo burn hurts like hell.

No, spending your life in cryo sleep would only shorten your life span. You see, while you sleep, your body doesn't need to worry about things it normally has to, such as movement and thinking. Sleep gives it time to repair itself. This is especially important to brains. While you sleep, your brains repair themselves, make new connections between the cells and do a lot of important maintenance. All the information you have gathered during a day gets sorted out. All this helps you be healthy and feel better the next day.

Cryo sleep essentially stops or at least slows down every function in your body. Thus, in cryo sleep, your body and brains won't repair themselves. You will wake out of cryo sleep exactly as you entered it. Eventually, not being able to make the necessary repairs and improvements, your body starts getting noticeable effects. Eventually, not getting true sleep will get you killed.

So no, replacing regular sleep with cryo sleep isn't worth it. While cryo sleep is like sleep, it's definitely not nearly as useful as real sleep. You don't just sleep for the sake of sleeping, you sleep for the sake of recovering your body from the effects of the day.
