Subject: FIX LATENCY ISSUES!!!

It's just a game folks.

Everyone, at some point during their Halo experience, has been involved with a game where a player was "lagging." This lag is due to that player having a horrible connection. I think Bungie should remedy this problem by enforcing a new data rate threshold that players need to adhere to. At the very least, every player should have a connection that is trained at 700Kbps down/540Kbps up. Anything lower is pitiful and useless to the gaming community. For 19.99, one is able to attain a rate of 1.5Mbps down/640Kbps up. That is becoming the de facto standard, not this 256Kbps up/down nonsense.

Whomever is giving them networking advice needs to be a bit more up to date. The days of the 256Kbps connection is over. Please join the 21st century where the majority of people have a connection rate greater than or equal to 700Kbps down/ 540Kbps up. This would solve all of the latency problems that are currently seen in the Halo 2 matchmaking because people will go in there with a dial-up connection and just have enough of a rate to play, but everyone else suffers. Bungie needs to place a failsafe on their servers so that if a player's connection falls below a certain threshold, he is ejected (not lagging out, that is different).

Just a thought.....

If it wasn't fixed would you still play? What because someone has a worst connection microsoft (cause they are incharge of live duh) are gonna give up a costumer? I know if I was not aloud to play something on a service I was paying for I wouldn't pay.

Dude, seriously, that sounds awesome.... sign me up...

Oh... wait.... I live in England.

Sorry, the best I can achieve (after months and months of harassing my best area ISP) is 3mb Down / 450 Kbps Up. Oh, and guess what, that's FAR SUPERIOR to every single one of my English friends who play Xbox Live.

Oh...wait...another niggle. Nearly 90% of our ISP's still use copper-wiring as the standard cable. Awesome...

Listen, I don't know where you're from (England/US/France) but those kind of speeds are FAR from standard over here in the UK right now. Yes, many ISPs are ostensibly offering such speeds, but the fact of the matter is that the cables used here and the distance of each individual from the local exchange seriously impinges upon the kind of speeds their lines can achieve.

As such it's the usual story... about 85% of MM for us sorry Brits is played on American host resulting in a decisive and easy victory for our good friends 'over the pond'. Usually such victories are accompanied by an abundance of self-congratulating smack-talk with already bloated US egos leaving the game more convinced than ever of their natural superiority at the game.

Of course, this is usually (not always) a completely unfounded and shallow farce but....hey....who wants to take the time to come play over here and experience things from the other side. Better to just flatter oneself..... even if it is delusional.

Bitterness aside.... I, and many of my friends, would love such speeds (particularly upload) that you've mentioned. It aint gonna happen anytime too soon though...

In the meantime... custom, custom, custom.

:-)

Sometimes it not the person having a terrible connection, its the bad host, bridging, standbying and/or American host for a UK/Australian gamer.

Stop stressing and live with it.

amen, amen

@bored28: dude... now you're even bashing people with a lower bandwith than you... that's just sad... take you imaginary superiority to the battlefield online and prove it there will ya?

Only Becausae I'm Awesome

Forum Tutorials --- WATCH THEM AND LEARN

Why did I just get the urge to punch you in the face a gogoplex times when I read your post?

Please, consider that not everyone can GET cable connections, and not just because of money problems. It could be because some lame -blam!-wit of an telephone company that was responsible for laying out the wires for the new (i.e. recently built) area I live in, decided that they wouldn't install the neccesary cables for such a connection to be allowed. And then you can add to the fact that almost ALL of the ISP's in the certain country, are total -blam!- boxes, and cap (limit speed) after a certain amount of downloading + uploading has been achieved.

And IF all of those problems are fixed, there is still the unchangable problem of how fast data can travel around the world. Since each packet must ping off through a satalite to get to your country, it will take at least 250ms for the round trip. So no matter what speed your internet is, it will still take that precious 250ms to get to the host and back. Unless you have a way to send those packets faster than the speed of light, there's really not much you can do about it.

So please, stop being such an inconsiderate, selfish american prick, and think outside the bloody box.

I am in the UK, and i have BT Broadband 8MB down and around 1MB up....

BT is the best, as my 2MB was better than my friends 10MB blue yonder and my other friends 8MB Some other company....

But now i have 10MB and i get host on regular occasions, and dont seem to have any major problems.

  • 06.01.2006 2:39 AM PDT

Well let's see, I have 1meg down and 256k up and, yep, no problems. I can play with my friends just fine actually, thanks. Can't host many players but that's irrelevant. What IS bad is being forced to be a client to a host halfway across the -blam!- planet. It doesn't matter what bandwidth the screaming elmo from ohio has, by the time I've finished carefully 4-shotting him on my screen in the UK he's killed me with the sword on his... twice. THAT is latency, you are talking about bandwidth, ie how much grot you can download at once.

Player matching in the future MUST take geography into account. And you MUST learn what the hell you're talking about :-)

yea, thats the problem.... You get the people hosting from the other side of the globe... and French are the worst, even though they are just over the channel, they lag you like F***. They lag everyone!

dude seriously....

if you dont have people online to play with who can match your superior bandwidth then play with others who have.

end of story.

no need to give -blam!- to everyone who cant afford, nay, get the sort of connection speeds you required as "standard" due to passe telecommuncation infrastructure.

Yeah sure, i got 512/512 kb/s, and that's for 24.90 € how come? well, I'll tell you why, I don't live in a city, I live in a village, better conections cost more. Not everyone lives in a big city with cheap fast connections.

The Frozen Minority - The most infamous clan borne from the Seventh Column.

God forbid us foriegn devils should lag up your game.

Did you not think that perhaps the reason we lag so terribly is not a result of our crap connections but our distance from host? Regional filters is what we need, minimise the distance and therefore the latency.

Stats Don't Mean Anything If You Cheat

The best solution would be for the first 2 mins of looking for a game it only takes people from your country/continent into a matchmade game that would resolve alot of latency/lag issues and probably reduce the amount of hate between countries

So so true. I always wonder why us Brits lag so much on French peoples host. It literally is just a few miles across the channel.

OP: don't be silly. Copper cables = max 256kb upload. Most of the UK has copper cabling, apart from main cities & any new telephone exchanges that have been put in place within the last year or so.

A much better "solution" to lag & latency would be servers. Don't give me crap about "omg you'd have to pay", because that's a load of twaddle. Battlefield2 anyone? Heck, Mechwarrior4 servers were provided by Microsoft until this summer, free of charge. They've been running for years.
