Why does the Insurrection still exist as late as 2552? This seems extremely short-sighted to me. Humanity is being devastated by the Covenant and these guys are just chilling out in the background and blowing up UNSC supply depots every now and then?

This element of the canon has always bothered me. It seems like by that point in the story, the Insurrection would have either vanished or at least established some kind of temporary truce with the UNSC.

Or, from the Insurrectionist viewpoint, they can finally obtain their goal from being free of the UNSC since it is weakened after the Human-Covenant War.

-Dead Orbit..

Their goal is to wait until the UNSC starts to lose their power.

Remember the UNSC is also a form of government as well a military power.

That's incredibly short-sighted, though. The Covenant don't want to destroy the UNSC, they want to destroy all of humanity. What's the point of waiting around for the UNSC to lose power when most of humanity is going to be dead by the time that comes to pass?

I like Halo games, nuff said.

They would rather die than be a part of the UNSC.

Because people are naturally stupid, short-sighted and selfish.

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

They were hiding out from the Covenant and the UNSC. In First Strike there were some Innies hiding out in some asteroids. Their hiding must have insured their survival since they are still around in 2553.
Also since the UNSC is weakened maybe they will come out in the open now with no fear that they'll be attacked.

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

The Insurrectionists were always dumbasses anyway. Why would they want to separate from the UNSC? They're traitors.

How much do we know about the UNSC pre-Covenant? They may have had legitimate grievances with the way they were running things.

Welcome to humanity of the future, filled with just as many idiots as today.

Over time, your honour grows. But to adorn the sacred battle harness of the Arbiter, will grant you the most honourable death, and you will ascend into to godhood.

Nonsense. not in the face of absolute annihilation.

Maybe there are multiple sub factions of the Innies with varying outlooks on the UNSC.

Look at the Captain of the Bellicose and the Ghost Fleet of Psi Serpentis for instance.

Oh yes they are. The death of the human race is an abstract, very big idea that only sounds spooky on paper but doesn't really mean anything to the individual on a personal level if they weren't there--too big of an idea, meaning people don't take initiative, just like nowadays when it comes to extinction prevention. It's like trying to get someone to feel like -blam!- in the light of 20million people being killed. Yeah, they might have the regular response of "damn, that sucks...." but they won't be proportionally saddenned by it. What is 20million people? A number, too big of a number for the monkey brain to work with, so it registers on a cold, calculated level more so than a human one. And like now, the scale of the destruction in Halo is far too large a concept to fully appreciate, especially in the minds of people who already are idelogically wired to hate the UNSC.

Many Innies felt they could wait it out, leave the Covies alone and then pick up the pieces after they were done. Because people blinded by ideology tend to be stupid.

They also thought the UNSC caused the war (why would they join the guys who caused it?) because people are stupid when they operate under pre-assumptions.

In short, people are stupid for whatever reason, but 500 years of social development won't change genetic wiring.

The same thing has been happening for centuries throughout history. Human nature.

  • 04.16.2012 4:56 AM PDT

Human nature. Even when being destroyed by an external force, we'll still try our hardest to finish the job ourselves first.

They don't need to be sad or angry about it. All they need is shock and fear in the possibility of the end of their own existence, and cold hard logic is all you need for that to happen. Events that don't directly affect people, but have the potential to and are massive in scale, quick in onset and occur out of nowhere from an unknowable threat I would say would get a lot of people worried and motivated.

We have nothing that we can even remotely compare to the Covenant genocide. I find statements of "Human nature" pretty absurd as a justification for all this ultimately pointless drama. If several dozen countries and their entire populations were wiped from the face of this planet by nuclear weapons from a hostile nation, with nothing but pictures of smoldering, radioactive wastelands and ruined cities to tell of the victims, you might be right in saying that people would not necessarily be sad or angry due to the abstract destruction and distance from their own lives, logic only being capable of fathoming it where their emotions cannot grasp it - but they would be scared -blam!-less in thinking that they might be next; scared into action, rather than being righteously infuriated at the act of barbarism. They would still understand what has happened even if it doesn't register intuitively: That massive destruction has happened, and that they don't know their enemy's intentions other than the fact that they mean to destroy all of you. At that point, there are no excuses, no debates over intentions or capabilities. It has happened to others, several times, without discrimination and they are threatening you now.

You would make a better point if the story went along the lines of the UNSC and general public knowing about the Covenant's intentions for something like 10 years before they actually arrived. Knowing that Humanity is likely going to face extinction in future, but not really caring because it is too distant. However, it happened to the UNSC rather quickly from out of nowhere; colonies dropped like flies, over 850 million dead every year, and the fact that no one really knows what the Covenant's motives are beyond the fact that they leave no survivors in their path. I'm pretty sure people would be getting worried by the fact that holidays and mail services were indefinitely cancelled to a growing list of colonies over the years, and the fact that the list is getting closer and closer to home, and the fact that, you know, the news networks were telling people when a colony was destroyed along with the death toll. Given that, and the Insurrection's intelligence network (How they are supposedly able to get above the UNSC propaganda...) and the moles that they have in the UNSC, I somehow doubt that they could be so severely ignorant of the true nature of the war.
