What if Bungie faced pressure from Microsoft to make Reach more accessible to lesser players and then, as a -blam!- you to Microsoft, included some of the retarded things that made Reach the worst Halo to date, ensuring it wouldn't sell as well or last as long?

RIP Bungie Service Records. You shall be missed.

Reach's population would be halved.

More copies of Halo:Reach were sold than copies of Halo 3.

Here is my opinion of why Bungie made it more "accessible" to casual players?

People who could not rank up in Halo 3 couldn't stand it, and/or were chastised by other online players for sucking. (I got booted from parties because of my 1st lt. rank). So players either stopped playing or bought new 2nd accounts. (I did this). This situation created MANY dissatisfied customers.

As a business, Bungie (it is a business) had many dissatisfied customers. I would propose, they have a greater number of casual than the competitive customers/gamers.

And those that got second accounts, were merely giving more money to microsoft. Bungie didn't benefit.

You can't alienate the majority of your customers with the product your provide. Therefore, you change the product.

I have a Legend rank. I am a horrible Halo player. But I have never been called names b/c of my rank, which makes me happy. Happy players means happy customers, which is good for business (Bungie).

The problem comes when your new product alienates even more customers than your previous.

So basically... Waypoint is pro-vanilla?

Waypoint isn't pro-anything so much as they're just anti-intelligence.

So you're saying that Bungie catered the ranking system to terrible players.

They catered to the majority of their players. Not all are/were terrible. (I fall in the terrible category).

The majority of Halo players are casual players. mlg and the likes make up a minority of Bungie customers. If you are a business, you are going to try to please the greatest number possible, even if it does alienate a few.

That's the problem: Bungie created this game from a business standpoint, not one that takes gameplay into consideration. By catering Reach to casual players (as exemplified by your story which showed that Halo 3 ranks have actual relevance to skill as opposed to Reach's, which are based on playtime alone), Bungie lost a good portion of the competitive fanbase.

As far as casual games go, Reach was no competition for larger titles such as Black Ops, MW3, etc. The end result was Reach becoming unpopular as a whole. Sheer numbers support this; Halo 3 had a much larger lifespan and a far greater population at this point in its life cycle than Reach has.

Bungie even managed to turn off casual players.

THe smart move would of been to make a game that would be good for everyone, not just 1 group.

More copies of Halo:Reach were sold than copies of Halo 3.

And I can assure you that more were returned as well.

I can only speak to the 1st paragraph . . . True Skill is integrated into the matchmaking system. Just because you can not see the ranking doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Bungie made a decision to meet the needs of the majority. There is a vocal minority about the direction Reach went. Because it is vocal, doesn't mean it speaks for a majority of players.

Look at the charts.

H3 held #1 spot for most played game for 3 years, falling #2 a couple of times to CoD.

Reach held it for what.... 1 month?

Do I also have to add the number of xbl players has increased each year?

H3 catered to nearly everyone.
Held top stop

Reach tried to cater to more casual/noob players, fell, and gave the crown to CoD.

You are comparing Reach to other games. . . If we are comparing Halo numbers, you need to compare Halo numbers. . .

Look at the charts. . . the number of H3 games played after 77 months is 11.5 Billion. This includes ODST numbers.

There have been 3.9 Billion Halo Reach games played in approximately 18 months.

Reach is destroying the H3 numbers . . . even if you include the increase in xbox live accounts.

Wrong. The consumer fell for it. They bought the CoD. They ate the fish.

~ Videogames are my favorite videogames ~

If Reach was made for casuals, then why can't they hit me with a DMR in Team Slayer, but can in other TU playlists?
It would be the opposite me thinks.

I tried to find statistical backing but I don't think there is any. That being said, are you kidding? 18 months later and this game gets 110k online at most. So many people sold this game back it's not even funny. So I'll stand by my "random -blam!-" as fact because I see no way for you to disprove it. You can't argue this game didn't fall from popularity quickly.

The e-sports community asked for a gun similar to the Halo 2 BR and got the DMR with bloom and yet you're telling me this game was designed for their competitive play? Bloom was random and could cause you to miss even if your aim was on-point. It dumbed the game down and gave everyone more time to aim their shots (because they were forced to) which allowed lesser players a better chance to win a gunfight. This has all been established and I don't feel I need to argue this point again.

This is also getting away from the OP. This isn't a "competitive vs. casual" thread, or a "TU vs Vanilla" thread.
