TThere's been a lot of talk and speculation about his epic Halo story. People are worried it will be ruined or excited that it'll be the best.storyending.evar. Take a step back from the video game world for a second: It's just not that impressive as a work of fiction. It's a good enough story to warrant a play through of the campaign, and I'd even say it's better than most video game stories, but outside of it's tiny niche microcosm, it pulp fiction. A Harlequin Romance novel for video game geeks.

The dialog in the game is the worst. How many corny one-liners have we heard from MC or the Sarge? Some of them were so ridiculous I think Ahnold would have had a hard time pulling them off. The high level story of flood, brutes, prophets, etc... is great, but the low level execution is lacking believability, even in the realm of science fiction.

Anyone with me?

What's the most troublesome element to you? I think it's the crap that Sarge Johnson got killed Halo 1, but because it's so poorly concieved and written, he's back in Halo 2 as a more supporting character. What's more is the way the books try to put a towel over their glaringly obvious mistake, as if that's all it takes to cover up a boner of a move.

Aliens is a great movie, also.

I totally disagree. While the Chief and Cortana seem like they have something going on in a cyborg-artificial intelligence kinda way, I don't believe there is a relationship there. That is what the Halo community wants. But I want something different and never before heard...

Bringing back the Sarge was the worst thing in a story since Dallas brought back Bobby.

I do fear the cliche one liners, but hope they bring back David Cross!

As I noted: The low level execution of the in-game story. Bad voice-acting and horrible dialog. Following in the footsteps of the OG Resident Evil:

"Here, take this lockpick, Master of Unlocking"
"A Dining Room!"

You're walking a very thin line Tartan. Stop flaming people and their threads.

While the story of Halo isn't a masterpiece compared to other works of art, I think it is pretty damn good for a video game. That is my opinion and I don't expect anybody to argue with me about it because it would be futile to convince me otherwise. Everybody has a right to their own opinion (that word of advice goes to anybody that feels like flaming the thread originator for his opinion).

I have to agree Wiltron. Essentially, this is the same story rehashed for the mmphteenth time. What next? Read your favorite science-fiction, good vs. evil, book, and you'll easily be able to figure it out. Is it a cool world with endless possibilities for a video game? Without a doubt, yes. A Halo MMORPG is definitely going to come... the amount of characters that one could play, and the interest that the world woudl have is incredible. Although that part of the story is still rather soft, it has some potential. But as for now, this is nothing more than your basic story of good vs. evil. Nothing new, or ground-breaking.

And I call BS on that. He died, with the Elite, unless somehow Elite hugs make a human being invulnerable to massive assplosions and capable to survive and navigate the vacuum of space back to their homeworld.

Welcome back! As I said, I agree that it's good as far as game stories go, but remove the outstanding gameplay associated with it and the story is barely worth reading (or watching in the case of the in-game cinematics)

The storyline in my opinion is pretty well written, except for a few things:
-The 3 other spartans? Where did they go, they were too far away for recall, where are they? dead in space from a covenant cruiser that destroyed the ship they were on, where>
-Sarge? I think this is one awesome character, they just need to explain or show in length how he got the hell out of the flood's grasp.
-Why did the guns randomly dissappear? What happened to the Assault Rifle? They should have left all the original guns in halo 2 and brought in the new ones. One of the main reasons for the pistol's use was so little cover on all the maps. There is barely any at all.

This is all that I can't think of for now, off to play NFSMW

That was only an egg, like the grunt sign in the E3 teaser. I think the graphic novel has a story about how he escapes, altho i'd have to check on that.

SikSui, your post was very insightful and related directly to the original topic. Thanks.

I think that if you take away gameplay from Halo 3 to incorporate more story it's a double edged sword. More story but less gameplay = a better capturing of story and theme, while more gameplay and less story = an awesome run n' gun with no point (Brute Force (minus the awesomeness) anyone?)

Wiltron, get a sense of Humor, it's exactly what your saying it is: A GAME, so if it's not poetic enough for you, go read the Grapes of Wrath, Shakspeare.

The chief may well be a pretty one dimensional Shwarzenegger-like character. But what always got my interest was the background, the mystery of Halo and the way it unfolded (in the first game), the whole backdrop mythology. That stuff is good. But the characters aren't anything special... not that I care. Optimus Prime was one-dimensional too, you'd better not be telling me he doesn't kick arse.

You've got some crazy commas going on there, Big Ed.

Anyway, sense of humor has nothing to do with it. "I do not think it means what you think it means".
