Bungie News: One Final Effort

Halo 2

Since the official press release and the rumors escalating to that point of Halo 2's ultimate demise from X Box Live (April 15th 2010), I was doing some Halo searching over the internet and here's some nice stuff that I pulled up.

-The first official release of Halo 2 was in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States on November 9, 2004. Anticipation for the game was high; three weeks before this release, a record 1.5 million copies had already been pre-ordered. Massive lines formed at midnight releases of the game; the event garnered significant media attention.

-The game sold 2.4 million copies and earned up to US$125 million in its first 24 hours on store shelves, thus out-grossing the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as the highest grossing release in entertainment history.

-Halo 2 is the best-selling first-generation Xbox game with 8.46 million copies sold by November 2008.

-"The Province's Paul Chapman listed the game as one of the most important of the decade, writing that games like Modern Warfare 2 would not be as enjoyable to play if not for the ground Halo 2 broke."

-"From the day of its initial release and up until mid-November 2006, Halo 2 was the most popular video game on Xbox Live, even after the release of the Xbox 360; its position was eventually surpassed in 2006 by the 360-exclusive Gears of War. Halo and Halo 2 are still some of the most played games for the Xbox console."

-Television channel G4 listed the release of Halo 2 as one of the game industry's biggest turning points during the 2000s, and helping to define how gamers played for years to come.

-"Bungie's sequel was a shot in the arm for Xbox Live subscriptions and previewed many of the features that would set the standard for Microsoft's online service on the next machine," author Sterling McGarvey wrote.

-The editors of Popular Mechanics listed Halo 2 as one of the top fifteen events of the decade, crediting the game's multiplayer with bringing online multiplayer to the console masses.

[My Opinion?] I think the world of gaming changed when Halo 2 was boldly released. It used to be as one of our fellow halo gamers put it, "Hey let's go to John's house and play card, now it's "Hey let's go to John's house to play Halo." This is why Halo is the game to play. All these other games nowadays wouldn't be the games they are now if not for Halo.

This is a Reach account that I created the day they announced his name in a bnet weekly update. Any stats regarding ODST or Halo 3 are irrelevant. Also, Halo CE master race. Halo 1 > other halo games > other games.

Ah, the Halo C.E. police is back. Nice to know you're still advertising.

Hanger one I just shredded with the SMGs until ammo was out and I just threw 'nades like a boss while BRing.

My experience playing Cairo Station on Legendary

Halo 2 means a heck of a lot more to me than Halo: CE ever did. Sure Halo:CE was great, I'm not saying it isn't by any standards but 2 improved in every manner. It define Online gaming for console, anyone who disagrees is simply ignorant, and finally there was a huge focus on both Campaign AND Multiplayer and you truly got your bang for your buck.

Halo CE may have set the stage for the epic that is Halo, but 2 was the headlining feature.

CE = Precursor
H2 = Forerunner

Both are significant to Halo history.

H3 = Flood
ODST = Human
Reach = Covenant

These 3 cannot compare to them although H3 is quite close, bringing us Forge, Theater, and File Share. Reach is the furthest in significance as it did not really add anything. It changed more than it added.

And yes, I'm saying that I've seen enough of the Covenant. After H2, the Covies just weren't so great anymore. Even in Reach, they're just not the same. The Covenant deserve to be forgotten.

H4 = John 117

I have high expectations for H4. This is the life or death moment of Halo.

Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Halo 3 ODST > Halo Reach > Halo CE

Based on campaigns.

I disagree. The Covenant are like the bottom Jenna block of the Halo tower. They cannot be simply forgotten, they are too important for that. A lot of the backstory and storytelling of Halo is based on the Covenant. Their weapons and vehicles all have their own roles in Halo and in the campaign they were the main enemy and have had some sort of presence in every single Halo mission to date, be it their weapons, their vehicles, their corpses, their ships or the covenant themselves.

They cannot just be forgotten at the start of the new trilogy. They have to have some sort of presence, or it won't be Halo.

And no, having cheap Forerunner weapons as equivalents of covie weapons will not do for me. Weapons which have been with us since the very start, the needler, the plasma pistol, the fuel rod gun, can't just be replicated by last minute forerunner weapons, because that's just lazy. If the covenant don't return, which I hope they do, then we must at least keep some of their classic weapons and vehicles and they must have some sort of presence

This is actually the stupidest thing ever posted on B.net:

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

The really big thing that everyone needs to understand is that Halo 2 had Xbox Live and that was a really big deal at the time. It was a fresh and exciting way to play multiplayer online and it really did change the console FPS gaming experience for years to come...IMO.

Have no fear. If you read the part in the Game Informer Halo 4 issue, you'll find that in the first moment of the game you are in fact facing Covenant forces. They're still there but the new enemy will take front stage. That's the way it ought to be. 10 years of the same -blam!- thing is redundant.

OT: Saying Halo 2 is special/revolutionary to gaming because it got people to go to their friend's house to play it isn't accurate at all. In no way is that revolutionary because many games did that. In fact, for many console Halo players, Halo 2 effectively ended the frequency of system linked game nights. I've been gaming for a long time and you can trust me when I say there have been countless of games over the years that have gotten me to go to a friend's house to play before Halo 2 was released.

If we are going to talk about what it did revolutionize, we ought to talk about Xbox Live's systems. As far as I'm aware, Bungie pretty much invented matchmaking and set up the framework for what would become the entire friend's/messaging system for Xbox Live 2.0. That's the real "revolution" Halo 2 created. The rest of it is personal stories/opinions that don't have much factual backing to them. You wouldn't believe how many people think Halo 2 was the first Xbox Live game...

Bungie created the friends list and other features that we use today on the 360. Microsoft dubbed these features "Typhoon Systems" back in the day.

The 3 quintessential weapons have been severely dumbed down at this point.

The plasma pistol was only partially restored in Reach. On Normal, the overcharged bolt isn't even strong enough to kill a Grunt Major with 1 hit. Also, it still suffers from reduced tracking of H3.

Likewise, the plasma rifle was only partially restored. I can fire longer without having to worry about overheating but the 'reduced damage against flesh' trait of H3 is still there.

The needler is even worse, being effectively useless against Elites. I used the CE needler for Elites when I didn't have the plasma pistol or plasma rifle and I used it for multi-kills. The blast radius and detonation timer are only good for 1 kill.

Hence, I wouldn't mind Forerunner replacements/tributes, although that is not what I was suggesting.

H2-H3 is where those weapons ceased to be functional.
Reach failed to restore them.
H4 may include them but it just won't be the same.

also graphics, no Halo game to date after Halo 3 broke new ground for graphics in the series when compared to it's predecessor. similar to how Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare still has the most ground breaking graphics in it's franchise

Amazing!

re: Reach changes

It changed more than it added.

Active Roster, co-op matchmaking in Firefight and campaign, in game file browsing and downloading gametypes, maps, films, etc.

File browsing was probably the best addition. Firefight was way worse than in ODST because it stopped being cooperative survival and turned into how many points can you outscore your teammates in 15/30 minutes. Campaign is pretty boring and way too easy. Active Roster was a good idea, but nothing really great.
