I don't know why people are so adamantly against this. I think I'd enjoy it. Similar to a "thank" button on other forums, as well.

Personally, I always like the "positives, but no negatives" approach a la Facebook. If you enjoy something, click the button. The only button for you to use if you don't enjoy something is the report button, if applicable.

It could discourage discussion, but that's not always a bad thing. A lot of people around here post for the sake of posting, and that's not good. If it sponged up a bunch of quote-only posts or really simple posts, it would help this place a lot.

The OP's "likes" could contribute to what goes in the Top Forum Topics, because right now, the web team is using our saved threads as a makeshift "like" button for determining these topics anyway.

And what about polls? They're already a method to express opinion on a subject without posting, and they work well. Would this be much different? And it would apply to every post.

It's not like we'd have to allow people to be able to sort them. But I think it'd weed out pointless discussion, contribute to trust rating and top forum topics, and not really be invasive. Just my two cents.

And I disagree that it would 'improve' the forum in any way.

I'd rather see some sort of rep button implemented. Quoting someone already serves as a "thank" or "like" button.

Less popularity-contests, more emphasis on content sharing, plz.

"There's daggers in men's smiles." - Donalbain, Macbeth, Act II, scene iii

A rate-up/rate-down button would be nifty, for posts and threads alike.

For threads, there could be a 'Highest Rated Threads' section to replace the 'Top Forum Topics' so rating threads up or down would actually have an impact on how many views the thread will get.

I agree - quoting someone isn't necessarily a "like" or "thank". It's simply a way of displaying the target of your response. For example, just because I'm replying to John's post doesn't mean I like it.
I'm slightly more against rep because I think that reputation should contain more factors than simply how many people chose to give you reputation. And reputation is specific to the user, while likes would stay with the specific post. But likes could still contribute to trust rating, which was one of my initial points.

I would like your post just so I wouldn't have to post saying I liked your post.

I wouldn't be too quick to make likes affect a trust rating. First I'd want to let it go for a while and see how many threads end up with the funniest flame/troll post being the most popular. Personally, I don't think I'd define stuff I like the same way I define stuff that gives me faith in someone's trustworthiness.

There you go, OP. No chance of it being implemented as a site standard, but the addon is right there.

Then again, no one seems to use that, defeating the purpose of it.

I use it.

See? I'm saying that just because it's a forum doesn't mean that every post is a good one.

What? Please don't tell me you are letting other people rule your thoughts and ideas. If you like the idea, stick to it. Don't change your mind, just because a few people disagree. Who cares?

Personally, I don't mind if we have a 'Like' button. I would not care at all.

Harsh... ok. just a thought
Don't be too discouraged.

Many people who frequent this forum have an obvious bias against anything related to social media, in particular Facebook. So having a reasonable discussion on such a feature is near impossible.
I think it's a good idea, it would prevent the following:
