Bye.

The other day I was thinking about Private groups. I had a look through some I am currently in and noticed three things. Groups didn't allow off-topic discussion, when posting an off topic thread had to put [Off-Topic] in the title and some groups have a thread where you post anything that isn't on topic as a means off keeping the forum tidy.

What I propose is a new ability for the group administrator, access to an "Add Forum" option. Currently I'm thinking of only allowing private groups a maximum of 2 Forums. The First forum would function as usual as the group's topical forum. The other forum could serve as the off-topic forum. If a group has this option on, clicking on the "Forum" button on the group homepage would bring you to the "Select Forum" page.

No longer would there be a stigma against posting [Off-topic] in the thread title. Now there's a place for these posts to go, where they can easily be separated into the appropriate On-topic and Off-topic Forum.

What do you think? Any feedback?
Please, be gentle.
:-)

That might help in some cases. But are enough groups big enough and active enough for two forums to be used to a decent extent? I have limited experience with groups..

Who the hell do you think I am?

So just adding multiple forums in a group? That doesn't sound like a bad idea.

New Flood

I'm a firm believer in groups and boards having no rules and one forum. I don't object to your idea, but if I was the admin of a group I wouldn't use it.

In the prime of Halo's interaction with private groups there were maybe 4-5 groups that would actually have seriously benefited from multiple forums. Most groups, the vast majority, don't need it.

That said, if OTK can get some active-love sometime soon then multiple forums might start helping again.

I don't know what groups you've been joining, but mostly every group I've been in have been pretty lax about what you talk about in there. I've never seen anyone need to make an "off-topic" thread in a group which is largely just a privately-managed Flood.

Pretty much. Obviously it doesn't have to be an Off-Topic forum, it's entirely up to the admins discretion what it will be for or even if the group needs another forum. I just used the Off-topic example because that's presumably what most groups would use it for.

I like this idea. I also think that groups should be able to have restricted forums for moderator discussion, since some groups have to create a staff group for administrative discussion.

This isn't too bad of an idea. I think if this were an option, I think the Admin should have a choice of Enable/Disabling it. Most groups that I'm active in, aren't really strict. Only groups directed toward a certain objective, are the ones that are strict. All others that I've been in (Café, Chapter, etc.) they don't care about what is talked about. As long as it doesn't involve putting down another user, or linking to inappropriate websites and such.

I think it'd be useful though, to groups that are strictly talking about one objective, to have an off-topic area.

I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

I stick to the belief that once you need more than one forum, what you really need to do is break away from Bungie.net and start your own website.

While there would be nothing technically wrong with the original idea, I do agree with this.

Per Audacia Ad Astra

It would clear up the mess amongst the on-topic.. topics.
But most groups, regardless of what the group is about, tend to allow any discussions with the side order of a spam thread.

The on-topic forum could be used as official updates, and the off-topic forum would be where the casual conversations and less group-informal discussions would go.

I like the idea.

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.
~M.D~

That would be pretty cool, though I like everything on one page...It might just complicate things.

I hope I don't come off as pretentious but I wouldn't mind a privately managed flood. The parody threads and the topical phases that pass through it are, to me, quite annoying. The flood has a lot of potential for great discussion, and I know there are some diamonds in the rough in the flood, but it has become a hive of blog posts, silly polls and (I don't know how to describe these threads) "Go to page 45 of a book and post the line, that is now your sex life". I think a smaller number users in an off-topic forum would have some benefits.

That was another example that I was thinking about using.

Join SIP today! We smell good. Promise.

It's like a gigantic snowball, rolling down a mountain, eating kids on the way.

The major groups im in all have their own "Spam Thread" or "Off Topic Thread" in which you can post most things off topic. It's worked pretty well in my opinion, and no need for an extra forum.

Off-Topic is definitely the most used forum on this site... and for a reason. Random, silly, irreverent troll guy stuff!

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

I think some groups struggle enough with activity without breaking their topics into separate pages.
I can see this working for active groups that are based around or founded on a certain topic, but I think most people will just use it because its there and jeopardize their group without even noticing.

But I love Halo 3 and Combat Evolved - never got the chance to play Halo 2 :(

"You get what you put into it."

When Legendary is too mainstream, you have Heroic. When you're the leader of the church of MLGeezus, have Epic in your username, and can't write 'About Me's' to save your life, what do you get?

This guy. And now, an side note: Most things I post contain lethal doses of sarcasm, so be warned, and try not to take me seriously.

Finally, a message to Bungie trolls everywhere.
