I've been itching to play Marathon with others, although I've only ever played Durandal. Is Infinity much different?

Depends on which version of Durandal you mean. Infinity feels a little different from the Xbox version simply because you control it with mouse and keyboard rather than a controller. Otherwise the two games play very similar. The story is a lot more confusing, but it is well worth the effort required to understand it.

Personally I like Infinity a lot more. It has more and (I feel) better maps. We've also got several 3rd party/ fan made maps to play too. Don't worry about downloading them though. As long as the host has them, everyone can play them.

1am gmt right?

I think it would actually be 2 AM.

OT, Could we extend this to Durandal on the 360?

Not this time. If this event goes well, we may do another oldschool carnage, and I'd definitely consider Durandal on 360 for that. The Aleph One version is free, runs on just about any computer, and offers more and better maps than M2 on Xbox, so that's why I chose Infinity this time.

We do play Durandal from time to time in FCAW, so if you are looking for people to play it with, it's a good place to look.

My laptop is terrible. I wish I could join in but I doubt this old thing could handel it.

It is worth trying to get it to run, more than likely you will be able to. You may want to turn off the high res textures, updated HUD, and Durandal on 360 style weapons and enemies, but unless you are using a laptop that runs windows 95, it should work. Sardonic is able to play it on a laptop from 2001. It isn't an ideal situation, but the game still runs. Don't give up before you try at least.

Speaking of all the updates to the Aleph One version, they are easy to turn on and off to suit your tastes/ graphical capabilities. Simply go into the "Preferences" menu then "Environment" menu then "Plugins" menu and turn on or off any of the updates you want. Personally, the only one I turn off is the HD Weapons update. I don't like how it looks and it is the only one that seems to effect the performance of the game for me.

You may also want to turn off Fog. (Preferences > Grapics > Rendering Options) It was put in because some of the 3rd party senerios use it, but the originals weren't designed to use it so it feels out of place.

I'm loving the enthusiasm, but again, please...

2.) Post the name you will be using when you play. If I don't know who you are, I can't guarantee you'll get in the game.

And rascal cat, could you be more specific, or are you just totally lost and need a step by step walk through? Don't be embarrassed. It wouldn't be the first time I've written one.

Sardonic is able to play [Aleph One] on a laptop from 2001.
But normally I run it on my desktop from 2005.

No problem. The process is very simple. I assume you have windows, but if not, let me know and I'll get you a Mac guide. It looks like a wall of text, but don't panic. I just tried to be as specific as possible.

Installing Marathon Infinity (Aleph One)

1.) Go to http://marathon.sourceforge.net. On the right, you should see Marathon Infinity listed. Click the button labeled "Download for Windows".

2.) Once the file is downloaded, move it to your desktop or wherever you want to have it. Just don't leave it in your downloads folder.

3.) Right click on the file you downloaded (should be "AlephOne-20120128-Win") and select "Extract All" This should bring up a window that asks you where you want to extract the file too. Desktop should be the default, so you likely won't have to change it unless you want to. Now click the "Extract" button in the bottom right corner. This should create a normal folder called "AlephOne-20120128-Win."

4.) If extracting the file didn't already open the folder, open the "AlephOne-20120128-Win" folder. Open the folder inside that one, and you should see a bunch of stuff. Most important is the "AlephOne application file. It should be easy to find because it will be a green Marathon logo. Double click that and the game should start right up.

You may want to make a shortcut and place it on your desktop so you don't have to open several folders just to start the game. To do this, simply right click on the "AlephOne" and select "Create Shortcut". Then you can place the shortcut wherever you want.

If you have any other problems or need help with menu settings in game, let me know.

Well, single player is much more confusing (yeah it's possible).

I feel like a terrible person right now, because I have a Mac.

Well, you're in luck then. The process is even simpler on a Mac!

1) Go to http://marathon.sourceforge.net. On the right of the page, under the Marathon Infinity title, hit the button "Download for Mac OS X".
Or, to make things even simpler, just click this link.
2) Once the download is complete, simply double-click on the downloaded file (MarathonInfinity-20120128-Mac.dmg).Note: Your Mac should have the software to open it, installed by default. If not, let me know, and I'll find you some 3rd-party software that can do the job.
3) After opening the .dmg file, you'll be presented with a window containing the Marathon Infinity application. Simply drag this application (and any other items you want) from the folder to any location on your hard drive.

And, that's it! You're good to go!

Note: Make sure you actually place the application somewhere on your hard drive - Which is to say, don't leave it in it's original location. Otherwise, it won't be accessible once you eject the disk image.

Compatibility Note: The type of Mac and operating system you're using may affect the operation of Aleph One. Other versions of the Aleph One application are available. So, if you have any problems, let me know, and I'll help you find a version that works best for you.

Okay, count me in, I'm bringing a friend.

Please post your friend's name too.

There is a type chat function in the game. The default type key is backslash I think, but you can change it to whatever you want. We also use Skype while playing. If you are interested in that send "Atom95" (me) a message and I'll get you in the conversation.

Usernames can be anything you want. Unless you have a mariusnet login (which you don't need to play) you will show up as guest until you join a game. At that point it will show the name you typed in.

The place you type your name in is in...

Preferences > Player

...Once there, type what name you want and make sure the guest box is checked.

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.
(Proud LONGTIME owner of the PC and Xbox versions of Halo CE)

I'm interested and I would probably use my Bungie.net name so I would be easily recognized but how will finding the game work? I've only played Durandal's multiplayer on PC and vagueley remember how searching for games work.

but how will finding the game work?

Good question. It is pretty simple. Here's the steps

Joining a Game of Marathon

1.) Fire up Marathon Infinity and select "Join Network Game"

2.) Make sure "Join by address" is NOT checked and select "Find Internet Game. That will take you to the lobby.

3.) On the right of the lobby is the window where hosted games will appear. Click on the game you want to join and it will let you in. I (the host) have to select your name from the list to allow you in so it won't be instantaneous, but once I do, you will be in.

Make sense?

Damn it! Why does something always have to come up whenever FCAW is playing infinity?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

We usually use Skype but IDK for tonight.

I warn you guys that me and my friend might be late.

Marathon is really fun (for someone who doesn't have an xbox and has the slowest computer ever). I've only played Durandal once or twice before. (Oddly Marathon lags every time I hit a S'pht...)
