Subject: Hidden groups

Would you like the ability to create/modify a group which is hidden from the public view? Such a setting would remove a group from being listed on users' profile pages, the group search, group spotlight, etc... All links to the group would return 404 errors if you were not a member of it. Although they would not be hidden from the web team for obvious reasons.

Just curious about your response to something like this.

Кланяються мені!

I can't imagine why anybody would want to hide their group this way. How does one join a group that is hidden? It would be annoying to have to "unhide" to let in new members. Perhaps keep the error away and make the only way into the group via direct link?

Either way seems like a feature that would be incredibly under utilized. Most people want members in their groups.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

We probably don't need to go to the extent of a 404 page. Being able to toggle the public display in the "group index" page might not be a bad idea. Making a group home directly linkable might be the way a way to add more privacy too.

However, if you're asking if I'd ever take a group off the public dossier, I would answer no. I can't think of any reason why I'd want to disallow the general public to be able to see a group. So long as you can keep a group closed, that's plenty private IMO.

Also, as the fella up there said, you'd have to toggle the 404 off the group if you wanted anyone to go there to join, and the feature would probably not be used all that often. Both solid points.

I wouldn't be against some ability to add an extra layer of privacy. I just wouldn't use it.

It would be good to avoid trolling raids, that's for sure.

Allow members with a certain security role the ability to send special "group invitation" messages.

One does not just send group invitations...

Yes Costco. I need a 50lb bag...I mean sack of sugar.

I could see where this would be useful with groups like HFCS and other employee/ninja groups that don't allow entrance other than very exclusive invites. However, I don't see this being something too useful for the general population of the website.

What are you trying to hide bro?

I can't think of any reason to hide a group. Leave it public, but just put turn on the apply button so that any applications can be approved.

Therefore nobody can join the group. You don't even have to acknowledge the applications - just tell people on the group page no applications will be accepted.

I doubt it has very little to do with elitism. I was actually thinking about hidden groups earlier today. To be honest, I can't really think of how this doesn't already technically exist, what with privacy settings and all the little things it allows us to do personally. But then again, the thought of keeping a group hidden to only a personal few is actually kind of cool.

I really only see it working for those few who are trying to avoid unnecessary attention to certain groups (HFCS anyone?) for whatever reason.

For me I see Bungie.net as a tool used to unite Bungie's community. While under utilizied, the group feature is one of Bungie.net's greatest assests. Having the ability to hide aspects of the community from the community would be detrimental to the fabric of the community.

And besides, nothing good has ever come from things that are discussed behind invisible doors...

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

Doesn't sound like too bad of an idea. For special projects, it could be a useful thing.

Call me paranoid, but the idea of a company offering that level of privacy/security to it's users skeeves me out.

daz, you sure love toying with new feature ideas.

I think I'm rather indifferent to this idea, currently. What sort of groups would you recommend this feature for, anyway? Thinking of anything in particular?

Inappropriate. Went a little to far with the butt hole tearing.

So, Facebook style?

I guess. I'm not sure if it would be that beneficial though.

HFCS?

I don't really see much purpose for this feature, making a group require approval for new members keeps people from seeing what is going on anyway.

HFCS?

I'm interested in how this would benefit the general public... We don't know how interested the members of HFCS are in hiding their group like this (especially after reading Evilcam's post)...

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Fun feature but not necessary.
