Subject: Hidden groups

I don't really see much purpose for this feature, making a group require approval for new members keeps people from seeing what is going on anyway.

Agreed!

This serves no real purpose when you have private groups that require you being allowed access to the group already.
All I could see is this to be a way for those nefarious individuals to create groups with entirely inappropriate names and get away with it.

I think it would be fun personally. And if a group is hidden and you get an invite it would be like saying that an exclusive club wants you to be a part of their club. Though there would probably be too many Fight Club references and groups.
I don't know but I wouldn't mind having a toggle screen where I could hide my group till I don't want to hide it and vice versa.

I like this idea. Odds are I'd never make a single hidden group, I just think we might as well give people that want it the right to have it.

They call me graland.

I can see it being useful. Some private groups have their own moderator groups or other more personal groups and they don't want random people constantly cluttering up the member que.

Having the ability to hide aspects of the community from the community would be detrimental to the fabric of the community.
So do you agree that groups set to private, thereby hiding their forum, are detrimental to the community as well?

What if I don't want the general public to see that it exists?

Even if one were created, would that really be an issue when nobody would know it existed?

1) What are you trying to hide on a PUBLIC website?

2) Because it could be against the CoC that YOU are here to uphold.

What if I don't want the general public to see that it exists?

What reason(s) do you have for wanting this facility?

1) What are you trying to hide on a PUBLIC website?
I don't think that's an appropriate question when I could just as easily ask any group administrator that's set their group to private the same question.

Regardless, I'll give you a possible example. Let's say I run a group which has an administrate component to it - a separate group for moderators and administrators of the "main" group. However, I do not want the members of the main group to know who the moderators are or those people who are potential stakeholders in the main group. I also do not want to be bothered by requests to join the group.

That's not the point I was making; forget the rules for a second. I'm talking about people making objectionable content (the kind you're referring to) but nobody seeing it and therefore nobody is offended by it.

There are sure to be groups which already exist that contain offensive content. Are you offended by that content? No, because you can't see it. The same can be applied to censored posts by blacklisted users.

The 2 best run private groups I am in already have their own separate private group that no one has access to, and no one really even knows the name of. If anyone did hit the 'join' button it wouldn't matter anyhow, they aren't getting in, so it's not a real issue even if they could find it.

Not seeing it, making it and it exists anyhow does not negate it being against the CoC if the name is offensive. You may not use an offensive name, but other multitudes would if given the option, and I think you know it.

Fwiw, I think it's not really that easy to find a group now that is public. I have used the group finder before, and without having an exact version of the name, you can't find anything.

This would be a little mean. It's like saying to people "You are not welcome," which is mean.

It can't be mean though if they don't even know it's there.

I am indifferent on the topic though. I see it as a positive, as many other websites with groups do have some sort of visible privacy settings for groups. On bungie.net it's really easy to just click on someone's profile page, hit the groups tab and bam you have all of their groups.

For unwanted attention, yes it could be a good thing for groups. Nearly all of the groups I'm in are invite only anyways, but I doubt they would use something like this or even for my own groups that I founded. If the option is there, sure - but there should be a request sent to someone to make it hidden from the public eye.

Perhaps a web-team member. It would seem like a silly process for them to go through though. Like I said, I'm indifferent about it.

I dont think there is really a point to it because there is already private groups and no one can go in with out being approved.

What would be the necessity? If a user is being heckled by other members because of a private group they're in (i.e. My Little Pony group) then I can see why you'd want this feature. However, other than that I've never seen the need for a link in my private groups to be hidden.

How does one join a group that is hidden?
Allow members with a certain security role the ability to send special "group invitation" messages.

This was my first question.

I really don't see any benefit from not being visible in the group highlight however.

Conversely, we should have the option to have groups able to be publicly viewed (but not posted in unless you join).

I personally think this is a more rewarding and beneficial option than hiding away in the batcave.

Positive vibes.

I only feel like this would be necessary if groups were open to the public (i.e. people were allowed to view what was going on inside the group without actually being a part of it).

I don't really think that the feature would be needed when we already have the option to make the membership of a group require approval, but I guess it could be useful for countering spammers and what not.
