In my opinion private groups are an asset to the community. While access is retricted, it still gives people the ambition to make friends with those in the private group.
Well, what if the members of a group aren't interested in "making friends" with other people? What if, for example, I wanted to create a group on Bungie.net that was ONLY for a select set of my friends and nobody else? Are you saying that would not be acceptable?

Could you also answer the original question I asked you?
I can see your point, having this feature could be benificial for a minority of the community. But as I have said, in my opnion by implementing such a feature your defeating the purpose of a communtiy.

As for your original question; No, having a private forums/group is not detrimental to the communtiy for reasons stated in my previous post.

But I must concede, you have many valid points. It felt like having such a feature would alienate some members like myself. Let's just say highschool was a lonely time for me, and I would hate to see a place I enjoy turned into my highschool experience.

Also just because a group is hidden doesn't mean that people won't talk about being in a hidden group. After all, I'm sure not all of them will adhere to fightclub rules...

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

This would be a little mean. It's like saying to people "You are not welcome," which is mean.

The irony in this post. . .
Skibur has 2 groups called you are not welcome. That is the joke. It loses the funny because I had to explain it.

Not really. Groups and public forums are like two different things. Groups are usually used for discussing certain topics with like-minded people. A hidden group wouldn't be different from a regular group, only you won't know about it unless someone decides to invite you to it.

But I must concede, you have many valid points. It felt like having such a feature would alienate some members like myself. Let's just say highschool was a lonely time for me, and I would hate to see a place I enjoy turned into my highschool experience.
Even best friends don't share everything.

That would be up to the admin of the group to decide how to deal with him/her, no? Even then, only a idiot would say he is part of a hidden group. No one would know what the hell he was talking about.

EDIT: Also, if groups, which can be seen by anyone, with or without joining (some requiring you to be accepted in), has not been a detriment to the community, how can hidden groups be?

Sure, I think this would be useful to groups that want to be unknown.

My Screenshots / My Group / Remember to follow the rules or you will get trapped in a box.

This would be a good feature but it wouldn't be used enough for value of keeping the feature. It depends on how difficult it would be to upkeep. The web team would have to decide.

This is a common misconception, so I won't fault you for it. No, an elitist wants his group to be visible, so that that way he can remind you that you aren't a part of it.

I don't think it would be that big of a deal if we had that. I would like a listing of every group on Bnet though. Right now all we can do is search for groups. I may be wrong on that though.

It seems like a good idea, but I was wondering how would this affect Bungie.me? Like would you not be able to see it on there either?

Why would it return a 404 and not a 403?

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

I'm sure if HLG was still alive, they would love this feature.

A 403 implies that the content exists, but you are not permitted to see it. A 404 implies that the content the URL leads to does not exist at all. Hence, it can also be used a technique for discovering existing content on web servers, even if you're not allowed to access it (which is completely stupid IMO - if a user shouldn't know that something exists, a 404 should be returned. Returning a 403 is basically giving them another attack vector).

If this feature were available, you could punch in a URL you suspected led to a hidden group. If it returned a 403 you could infer that the group exists, thereby invalidating the idea of it being hidden. If it returned a 404 you wouldn't know if it existed (assuming you had prior knowledge about this) or not.
