I don't know if there's something I've just missed, but I have a question regarding the Covenant's attitudes toward the Halo(s) in Halo CE and Halo 2. In Halo CE, the Covenant's objective in securing the Halo is to utilize its offensive capabilities. This implies that they know it is a weapon (as they do indeed refer to it as such) of great power, even though it is still an immensely religious object. It is unclear whether or not they know anything about the index, monitor, etc., though they are searching for the Control Room, implying that they must know something of its firing mechanics. They simply want to use it against humanity as a weapon (as explained by Cortana when she taps into the Covenant battle-net, after rescuing Keyes on the truth and Reconciliation). Their position in Halo 2 seems much different; they do not intend to activate the Halo offensively, but instead as an instrument of faith. They want to activate it for the purpose of initiating the Great Journey. Perhaps the Great Journey is in fact a mass suicide (though it is never specified) , but, as the Arbiter so adamantly refused to believe the Gravemind or the Master Chief on this, it seems much more likely that in this game they are not aware that it is a weapon. If anyone has any information that may illuminate this, I would greatly appreciate it.
