Should the ability to collapse posts be granted to the average user? It would only effect the user who flipped the switch...like a cookie on the browser or something....

I would rarely use it, but I can't think of anything wrong with it.

And, if you mean "to the average user" as in, moderators hide posts, I'm pretty sure they can't. If I remember correctly (bad memory, I warn you), being reported enough times hides a post.

I don't see why not. I probably wouldn't use it very often, but I don't see anything wrong with it.

I'd say no. Small as the icon may be, it'd just be an unnecessary piece clutter not worth being there.

I don't see why not. Maybe as an option when reporting a post?

I'm going to use this dirtbag as an example..... His posts take up the entire count of characters to post malicious spam...granted people are reporting it but it's still an eyesore. So having the ability to simply collapse all his posts until banned or otherwise disabled by the user who collapsed it. It's not like blocking the user but all posts by said user will appear like the reported bar and if you want to read what was posted you need to click it manually.

That user is actually who influenced my post.

That's an idea I was toying with for a little. Making it so a reported post is automatically collapsed. Or perhaps, making it so you can only collapse a post that you've reported. (I'm just throwing these out there, not saying I do or don't like the ideas)

Report and move on is a fine thing but when an incident occurs in a very decent thread it becomes an eyesore.

Um, I didn't say anything about "report and move on"...? What do you mean?

I don't even know if that has a lot to do with the subject at hand.
I was just talking, sorry...wasn't directed at you and it's Sev's early morning thread...stupid will happen. :P

In wine there's truth but in silence there's surrender.

The ability to block specific users completely would be much more useful... or is that what you meant?

I think the usual arguments for or against a feature shouldn't be too heavily considered; we should judge the feature by it's unique merit. Granted, I don't think it's very necessarily either, but there's nothing about this feature particularly that set off a red flag, few features are truly necessary, and it could be implemented in a seamless way, if well designed (for example, not even having a button, just hiding the post once reported).

Block is to completely hide the user....like a blacklisted member....I'm not pushing for it to go that far.

Not to mention, if we go down this road of debating if users should be blocked, this thread will soon loose it's focus...

I know what you mean and there isn't anything naturally bad about the idea but I can't understand how it would be even worth the time to implement. I mean if there is a spam account going on a spree, the scroll bar comes to save the day.

Indeed. I don't know how the report button works or how easy it is to change the function of it but a function which one report collapses the post would be awesome.

You could also just scroll a bit faster.
I don't really see the point of this feature.

Hardly effective if spam user is just double or triple posting just to obstruct the view.
