Subject: Should people require a bungie.net account to post?

I'm sure most of you have probably seen on some news websites that allow you to post comments from or under different accounts from different providers. Some allow you to sign in using a provider then you post from an account created for you on the site. However, there are other sites which allow you to post directly from your account. For example, on this site it allows comments to be posted (and replied to) from people using Windows LIVE, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts.

I think this could be especially useful for people who follow Bungie's Twitter or Facebook accounts where they are sent links to articles posted on this site and want to comment on them, but aren't interested in any of the other features you get with a Bungie.net account.

The world is not beautiful: And that, in a way, lends it a sort of beauty.

I guess it'd be helpful, and it'd be pretty cool having "anon" users, although it isn't really that hard to make an account.

Missread a bit, still, it'd be kind of helpful.

How would this work in terms of moderation? Like would you be able to ban someones facebook account from posting on bungie?

I'm curious about this as well.

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

I think a proper forum should always have a dedicated login system separate to social media. I don't see the harm in having it linked to social media sites (see the Waypoint forums), but i would rather it stay with the windows LIVE login system, or change to an system exclusive to bungie.net.

If someone wants to post on these forums, it really isn't difficult to make an account. Considering the majority of people here would have or have had an xbox LIVE account, they should already have a windows LIVE account, so it isn't a hassle to create an account from there. I don't imagine that people who are not very involved with the online side of things in Bungie games would be very interested in joining the forums. I sure wasn't until i got xbox LIVE.

Since Bungie is opening up to the PS3 and what-not, I don't see why not.

This may or may not be possible, but when someone tries to create a post using their Facebook account, for instance, the site could create a kind of "internal Bungie.net account" that is linked to their Facebook account.

This opens up all kinds of possibilities too. For example, if there's an internal link between each post and the account, and Bungie.net were to allow authentication with Facebook accounts, the site could then give the user the opportunity to explicitly create a "fully fledged" Bungie.net account. They could sign in using their Facebook account, and all of their old posts that were created while using their Facebook account could then be explicitly associated with their Bungie.net account in the same way they are now.

Posted by: r c takedownWhat about people who play Crimson? They already have to sign in with their Facebook accounts to view their stats here. So why not let them post [in the Crimson forum] using their Facebook accounts?

If people posted with their Facebook accounts, does that mean we see their Facebook profile in a setup like a Bungie.net account style?

If so, I think it would take a little bit of time to get used to seeing so many different things. It would be hard on the eyes and what not. Moderation might have new rules.

Also, if it's just logging in to your Bungie.net account via another login and password for another website, I could see that happening. Not everyone has Windows LIVE, and the majority of the people(except me) have a Facebook or Twitter.

Next question...gamertag linking, I assume the gamertag will forever be slaved to WLID so would we be keeping WLID as a sign-in option?

@Vinyl_Hb

Do not want! I like this site the way it is. I never want it to change, or go mainstream. *Hipster status*

I figure if we're going to actually allow people to comment on news posts (which I am somewhat opposed to, as most comments rarely contribute anything), it shouldn't have to be restricted to Bungie.net accounts. However; there are two important factors when considering this: moderation and necessity. The issue of moderation has already been raised, and it would clearly require new methods and effort to enforce moderation to non-bungie.net accounts. When considering this and the effort required to incorporate the system, I ask if there really is such a populous fanbase that would like to comment on Bungie news but would not want an account. If there is a considerable number of people like this, then I would have no problem with such accounts commenting on news. This is the first mention I have heard of this dilemma, though.

I would not want such accounts integrated to the forums (Crimson forums as an exception) on whole, as it would confuse and splinter the existing Bungie.net population, not to mention increasing favoritism biases and introducing photo avatar biases. Additionally, I would not like to fully alter the comment system to that of the example posted, for I would not support a rating system or alter comments to a reply-basis.

This would be awesome!

I have a ton of friends who avoid this site simply because of the windows live log on.

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

I am unsure whether I am for or against this idea. I am leaning towards being for the idea. Although I would rather sign in using my WLID I can see the benefits of being able to post via another network. It would really make B.net much more open and easier to use. It would increase the flow and allow for some pretty cool features.

To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

I don't think of it to change my life, as all my friends who play halo also have an bungie.net account but since bungie is making the next game on multiple platforms (i think atleast) they have to add psn login for example or psn linking to accounts.

No thanks. I'm all for adding value to accounts rather than making them more unnecessary than they already are.

This is exactly the type of thing Bungie should do. They are going to have to allow people to create accounts using a PSN handle (and more if they release on even more platforms). They should expand this even further and allow more accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Google +), then allow people to bundle their accounts together.

I'm in agreement with this. Even if they don't post that often, you still learn about what sort of person they are to an extent.

Simply as, The Face of Boe.
