"There's daggers in men's smiles." - Donalbain, Macbeth, Act II, scene iii

After searching the FAQs and undergoing some extensive Googling, I have found no solution to my issue. So, I'm turning to the Bungie Community for help.

I have been combating a problem with info theft on my main e-mail account (which is also my primary WLID). For months, I have been in the processing of changing my security measures and restoring my e-mail account, but I have finally given up. Now, I am taking on task of adopting a new e-mail and WLID for all of my online activity.

Yesterday, I successfully changed the WLID associated with my Xbox Live account. This action, however, 'un-linked' my Gamertag from my Bungie.net account. I attempted to link the Gamertag again, but due to the differing WLIDs, it seems that this course of action is impossible.

What should I do? Creating a new Bungie.net account would be the simplest alternative, but due to the memories and history associated with this account, that seems like a waste.

Thanks in advance.

Why can't you just use the same WLID on your xbox as your account?

  • 04.22.2012 8:01 PM PDT

So let me get this straight:

From your Xbox, you changed your WLID, but this unlinked your gamertag from Bungie.net. You want to have your GT's new WLID be this new e-mail, but keep your gamertag linked. Is that correct? If so, just do this:

First, you have to put up with not having a linked gamertag for 30 days. After those 30 days, change your WLID on your gamertag BACK to what it was originally from your Xbox. Then you are going to go to the WLID website (www.passport.net). Log in with your original WLID and password. The page it redirects you to will have account options. The top one will say 'change Windows Live ID.' Choose that, change it to the WLID you want your profile to be.

This will change the WLID of your Gamertag and keep your Bnet account linked. Note, please, that this means you will also have to start signing into Bnet using the new WLID rather than your old one as well.

The WLID on my Bnet account is the WLID that was compromised. I prefer to not use it anymore, hence why I'm changing my WLID on everything that I possibly can.

I would change the WLID on my Bnet account, but that's not possible.

Have you tried looking at this?

If nothing on that page helps you, in all honesty I would just wait until the "new hawtness" is released on Bungie.net. See what that can do. There has been a few posts by Achronos that login information and identity is something on "the list" to be addressed.

Not to mention a possible feature to change your Bungie.net profile name. There is no hard confirmation on this (as they won't release that information) but with E3 in less than 2 months away, I wouldn't be surprised if we get some new information on what's happening around here.

All in all - bungie.net is in a transition phase right now, I would personally just wait it out and see if anything can help you. If not, maybe then consider making a new account.

This won't be particularly useful in my situation. My Gamertag already has my new WLID, but my Bnet account does not. My old WLID (the one that is associated with my Bnet account) is so far down the crapper that I can't change any of my information on it; the entire account is in lockdown, for lack of a better comparison. Which is why I made an entirely new WLID instead of refurbishing the old one.

I know. That's the exact situation I was addressing.

You don't have to change any of the information on the WLID. All you'd be doing is logging into it just like you do with your Bnet account right now. the entire account is in lockdown, for lack of a better comparison. Which is why I made an entirely new WLID instead of refurbishing the old one.All you'd need to do is log into it. If you can't do that then you wouldn't be able to log into your Bnet account, no?

I can attempt to run through those steps again, but I already used use the 'change Windows Live ID' feature under the account options, and it gave me an error notification saying that the 'operation is restricted'.

I Googled the error code from the message, and I couldn't find any information on it.

Can't help you there, sorry. You might try customer support for that then. All I know is if the situation I described in my first post is correct, then those are all the steps you need. I've done them multiple times ( I change my password constantly and my WLID every few months... because I'm paranoid) without any issues whatsoever. That's all I can say on it unfortunately.

Your account was compromised? So, just change your password.

  • 04.22.2012 8:28 PM PDT

-blam!-, this may sound like a dick thing to say but I'm glad it wasn't me that did this...I was 12 hours away from ending up like you....

Sucks what happened....Hopefully this will prompt some look into how the thing is setup.

So my email for this account is for example is XYZ@hotmail.com and has no linked gamertag....

My old one is ABC@hotmail.com and that's the one that matches up with the gamertag and a separate Bungie.net account. What would happen if the WLID matched on both sign ins?

Good morning AutobahnRacer,

I've listed a couple solutions for you below. Please feel free to send me a PM or reply to this thread if you need further assistance.

OPTION 1 : SECURE YOUR ACCOUNT (RECOMMENDED)Note: If you cannot access http://account.live.com and change your account information with the same logon credentials you use to sign into your Bungie.net profile, visit this page to reset your password. If none of those reset options are working for you, please contact Microsoft support here. If resetting your password does not resolve your issue and your account remains locked and/or restricted, please contact Microsoft support here.

If the same Windows Live ID is associated to a Bungie.net profile and Xbox LIVE gamertag, the two become linked. Bungie does not allow you to change the Windows Live ID associated to a Bungie.net profile at this time. My recommendation would be for you to change the Windows Live ID of your gamertag to match the WLID of your profile, thus linking the two (like they were before). Unfortunately, you can only change the Windows Live ID associated to your gamertag 30 days after your previous WLID change. In the mean time, I've provided some steps you can take to secure your account and make sure you don't encounter information theft issues in the future.

A. INSTALL AN ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM ON YOUR COMPUTER.
Most hackers get your password through malware (malicious software) that's been installed on your computer without your knowledge (for example, when you download a new screen saver or toolbar). It's important to clear your computer of viruses or malware before you change your password. That way, the hackers won't get your new password.

After you install an antivirus program, set up the program to get updates and scan your computer on a regular basis. If you're running Windows, you can download and install Microsoft Security Essentials for free. I would highly recommend Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which is also free.

B. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD.
Visit this page to change your password. A strong password meets the following criteria.
* Make your password 8 characters long.
* Don't use your username, real name, or company name.
* Don't use complete words.
* Make it significantly different from previous passwords and don't use the same password for multiple accounts.
* Include a combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols (such as #, !).

C. MAKE SURE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM IS UP TO DATE.
Most operating systems have free software updates to enhance security and performance. Because updates are important for keeping your computer safe, Microsoft strongly recommends that you set up your computer to get these updates automatically. You can easily set up your computer to get the latest updates automatically for Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.

D. MAKE YOUR ACCOUNT SAFER.
Adding security info to your account via this page can make it easier to recover your account if someone else takes control of it. Because this info is used for your safety, it's a good idea to add as much of it as you can. Learn more about why it's a good idea to add security info.

Here are some extra tips.
* Make the answer to your security question completely unrelated to the question, therefore giving your account a second password.
* Be careful signing into Windows Live ID related services from public computers as well as unsecured wireless networks.
* Never reply to emails asking for account information, especially your logon credentials.

E. CHANGE THE EMAIL OF YOUR WINDOWS LIVE ID.
Instead of creating a new Windows Live ID, you can simply change the email address of your current Windows Live ID if it's not already a Microsoft domain (hotmail.com, live.com, msn.com). If you decide to do this, wait at least 8 hours after changing the email before you continue to use Windows Live ID related services. I would recommend doing this before you go to sleep.

F. LINK YOUR GAMERTAG TO YOUR BUNGIE.NET PROFILE.
This is easy. Change the Windows Live ID of your Xbox LIVE gamertag back to what it was, re-linking your accounts.

OPTION 2: START OVERIf you don't feel confident that the advice above will resolve your issue, you can always start over.

A. SIGN INTO BUNGIE.NET WITH THE NEW WLID ASSOCIATED TO YOUR XBOX LIVE GAMERTAG.
If you sign into Bungie.net with the new Windows Live ID you associated to your gamertag, it will prompt you to create a new profile if you haven't already. Once your profile is created, your gamertag will be linked to it.

@Cryptic@burritosenior:

Thanks for all of the help. I cleared up the majority of the problems with the WLID linked to my Bnet account, so the guide that burritosenior wrote will resolve the WLID/Gamertag issue that I'm having.
