DL the newest drivers, otherwise it might be something to do with the mac. To be frank, I'm not familiar with macs. I think there is a preference setting where you can change stuff like that, but im not sure.

drivers? we don't do drivers, but i'll check the nvidia site anyways. do you think it could be cos i only have 512mb of RAM?

Maybe. As I said B4, I'm not really familiar with macs. Why would you only get 512 for a dualie? Thats crippiling it! Get another 512 stick.

ah well, they came with that as standard, and a -blam!- nvidia graphics card which i upgraded not that long ago, and i haven't got around to upgrading the ram

NO setting in halo depends on the amount of ram you have... There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to enable drivers, unless the mac still thinks it has that crap card in it still.

Sounds like a classic driver problem. Update your drivers.

That, or Macs just don't like shadowing effects.

BTW, your RAM has NOTHING to do with what visual effects will be available. RAM just affects your performance.

why did u get a mac? pc's r awesomer. im not sure wat u can do to help it, but u do need more ram, lol, 512 for a dual core, oh thats a good one.

First of all, please use more efficient grammar in your posts. "u'? "r"? "wat"??? HUH???

And also, that's just your opinion, ImSpartacus. I myself use a PC, and I personally think PC's are much better than Mac's myself as well. But I don't go around the forums bragging how much better a PC is than a Mac. Most of us don't. Please keep the bragging opinions to yourself, but let out the gaming opinions. Although it's not against the forum rules, who knows? You might've offended him, by saying PC's are better than Mac's...

Anyways, getting back on the subject. It wouldn't hurt to get more RAM (I'm planning to upgrade as well), but shadows and other settings aren't based on how much RAM you have. I'm sorry, but it just isn't. The best thing you can do right now, is to d/l the new drivers. That'll probably help with the setting effects.

I myself am on a PC (866mhz 384mb ram, and 128mb Geforce FX 5200)

Anyways... I can turn on all options in the entire game except for environmental effects under sound. So I'd say it has to deal with either A.) Drivers or B.) Mac's (I'm a mac fan but my Mac can't get close to Halo, it's an Old G-3)

I honestly believe it'd be a driver thing but I looked and they don't have GeForce drivers for a mac, they do have them for Linux / FreeBSD which mac is sort of based off of (OS X) so you *could* give those a try, no gurantees though.

Also "PC's are Awesomer" , I do believe PC's are not awesomer nor is awesomer a word you mean "more awesome xD"

Sorry couldn't resist busting out the grammar police.

Ah, good, another Mac gamer! I can't display shadows either. When it's greyed out, it means that your video card can't support that option. I also can't change my monitor refresh rate, or display specular effects. You have a good setup, and installing any driver updates from the website of the manufacturer of your card is the only thing I can recommend. That, or get used to playing Halo without shadows.

Thanks, yeah I could give it a try.

And by the way, I still have my old G3 too!

I think the question's been covered quite well, so I'll voice my opinion about macs...

Depends on what you want a computer for. Some want a versatile, stable, easy-to-use and low-maintenance multimedia computer, for whom the Mac would be perfect. Others want a gaming-oriented system or a process-intensive computer, for which the PC would be the way to go.

ya, i couldnt turn on enviornment sounds before ether, but i just turned on hardware acseleration, and i could. i sugest you do turn on environment sounds. its makes the game WAY more realistic.

Don't drink to excess– You might shoot at tax-collectors... and miss

Computer: Power Mac G5 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2) Number Of CPUs: 2 CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB Memory: 1.25 GB Bus Speed: 900 MHz

ATi Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
Display Type: LCD Resolution: 1680 x 1050 Depth: 32-bit Color

I'm at work now, no Halo on this computer, but I'll check at home. I've also got the dual 1.8 Ghz G5. I recently switched to an ATi card from the standard Nvidia. I thought I could get shadows working on the old card, but I'm not sure. I used to play at lesser settings to get better performance. I liked the way the sniper scope looked at lower settings– the whole scope was sharp, not just the center.

With the ATi, there are system level settings that you can set to override the in-game preferences. I don't recall that on the Nvidia.

When I start the game, a dialog box comes up with some video and other options in it, (there's also a check-box that says: "don't show this box again", so you might have checked it in the past– so you might not get it. After the game opens there are other video settings you can play with in the preferences.

Welcome to another Mac gamer. Don't mind the PC bigots.

RAM means Randam Access Memory. That has nothing to do with the video settings. Update your drivers, or get a PC.
(latter is better)

wait, we dont do drivers? Duel personality? Another Collective?
???

Actually, Macs come with drivers preloaded for most known compatible video cards, printers, etc. Just plug and play.

I don't have a Mac, so I wouldn't know what the problem is, but as I have said before, update your drivers. Or try playing at different resolutions. But be warned, make careful note which resolution is good for your Halo needs, while you may finally be able to enable shadows, you'll be losing FPS every second, every round, if your graphics card is not able to run Halo in smooth settings at such a high resolution.
