Subject: Do polls kill threads?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I say yes

A simple yes or no poll does not require anyone to post and discussion could die.

It all falls on the OP. It's their job to create a poll and open up discussion/debate to whatever subject the thread is about. For example, if you make a thread with a poll, but not much else, then you can't really expect much discussion to happen. See? It's all OP's fault. Well, not on them completely. I guess the community has a share of the load when it comes to discussion. After all, we are the posters/voters.

Most of the time, people vote instead of posting, killing the thread.

Per Audacia Ad Astra

It depends on the discussion value of the poll topic.

  • 04.25.2012 8:48 AM PDT

No not always.

I think people assume that a vote will suffice, so in a way... yes.

No, I think they may steal some posts, But not fully kill a thread. Perhaps "Injure" the thread.

  • 04.25.2012 11:13 AM PDT

Wow, this has been a big conversation I never expected.

I agree with the general consensus, it depends on how the OP sets up the poll.

I don't think its very controversial really.

But yeh sometimes it does, but other times i think its necessary to add a poll. If you give a good post then you will get a good discussion whether or not you have a poll. [/IMO]

I don't think polls kill threads. If the topic of a particular thread is bad or low quality, the poll will be too.

A well thought out thread that is capable of intelligent conversation will likely benefit from a related poll.

Saying poll makes me feel a little dirty.

Absolutely. Votes don't count as replies. And when the only required answer is a vote, the thread will immediately die.

It's like a gigantic snowball, rolling down a mountain, eating kids on the way.

Really depends on the whether or no the poll is interesting/useful/not-annoying

Was I suppost to put something here?

The vote is for the statistic, the reply is to add your reason why and to bring more people to the Dark side with you.

  • 04.25.2012 8:45 PM PDT

I've made polls that have turned into huge threads.

If the thread is based around the poll then yes but if the thread has discussion value then no...

If the poll is actually useful and needed for the thread, then it's okay.
