It just suddenly hit me. Why is this website ".net" while other gaming websites that I post on are ".com"? More curious than anything.

I'm 90% sure this thread belongs in this forum.

Bungie.com was probably already taken. (Incorrect)

Yes, this topic is in the right forum.

Way back in the day bungie.net was the server thingy or something for the Myth online bits, whilst bungie.com was the commercial site for the studio. When the myth servers went down bungie.net was repurposed into a community site which eventually became what you see today, whilst bungie.com withered and died.

From what I can remember thats more or less it, been a whilst since I've seen Achronos spell out the history of the whole thing.

No, the Bungie.com domain is also owned by Bungie.

The ".net" domain name is intended to reflect the fact that this is a website oriented towards fostering the Bungie community rather than purely selling Bungie products.

There may not be a "I" in team, but there is a "I" in Win.

So, would these two together spell out the whole story?

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

Bungie.net rolls off the tongue a lot easier.

This thread taught me something I never knew... Bungie.com works as well. 0.O

Yeah, I noticed that as well. And you can use a specific link, but only change ".net" to ".com", and it will give you the same page. For example, "http://www.bungie.net/forums/topics.aspx?forumID=3" links to the same page as "http://www.bungie.com/forums/topics.aspx?forumID=3"

In addition to the existing explanations, it's somewhat interesting to note that all Bungie email addresses use ".com".

  • 04.25.2012 11:06 PM PDT

.net sounds way cooler than .com anyway.

  • 04.26.2012 12:35 AM PDT

Does anyone even read these?

It is also interesting to note that bungie.gov is also owned by Bungie. This is probably for when Bungie takes over the world.

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

It's a net meant to ensnare you, and keep you here.

Balancing speed with visual fidelity.

So people would confuse it with Battle.net.

That's due to atrocious spelling errors that go uncorrected by today's public school (sub)standards...

BNet sounds better than BCom anyway. If it were MCom, however...
