Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter are some of my all time favourite games and it’s time for a little homage to another of the Bungie Greatest Hits. This howto intends to assist the reader in getting a copy of Myth, and getting the most out of the experience. However, I am not a fountain of myth lore by any standards – I would appreciate any assistance, pointers, corrections and help that you guys can give.
Overview and history of Myth
Who better to explain what Myth is, then Bungie? Here is the gist of it:
Myth is a Real Time Tactical game, where troop placement and movement means more then numbers and unit strengths. The single player campaign has a rich plot, but the multiplayer component is where Myth really shines. Rooms, rankings, game types and orders – it’s all there.
When Bungie joined forces with Microsoft, they sold the rights to Myth and Oni to Take 2 Interactive, who went on to make Myth III.
Getting a Copy of Myth II
If you wish to play Myth, your best bet is to get a copy of Myth II: Soulblighter. It has a better engine, more plugins, and best of all, you can download the Myth: TFL solo campaign for free.
Myth II too old to be found on the shelves of your local game store, so look in the bargain bin, or on ebay. Take 2 Interactive have released a package called Myth II: Worlds, that has the games plus many popular plugins and tools. Internet searches might uncover shops that still sell it, so good luck hunting!
Installing Myth II
Windows:
Insert the Myth II CD in your CD drive, and install it as in the manual. If, at the end of the install, it complains that service pack 3 is required for NT, use alt+ctrl+del to kill the installer. Myth II will be installed, and will run fine.
Once the installation is complete, download and run the latest windows patch for Myth II from http://projectmagma.net/sb_downloads.shtml, following the prompts.
Mac OS 9:
To install Myth II on a Mac, insert the CD, double click on the Myth II Installer and follow the prompts. Once it is installed, download the and run the Mac Classic updater for Myth II from http://projectmagma.net/sb_downloads.shtml.
Mac OS X:
Firstly, you need to download the latest update to Myth II from project magma. It includes an installer for OS X: http://projectmagma.net/sb_downloads.shtml.
Uncompress the update and mount the disk image, then launch the Myth II installer.mpkg and follow the prompts. Myth II will install to the /Applications/Myth II folder.
An alternative is to Copy the Myth II f folder onto your hard drive, then copy the following folders and programs into the new Myth II f folder on your HD: tags, cutscenes, Tool Docs, fear and loathing. Then run the myth II 1.5 updater.pkg to update it to the latest version.
Myth: TFL in Myth II
The easiest way to play Myth: TFL is to download the plugin for Myth II http://projectmagma.net/tfl_solo.shtml. Once the download is complete, uncompress it into your Myth II plugins directory.
Then, fire up Myth II and choose New Game, click on the Plugins button, select “Magma – The Fallen Levels” from the inactive list, click on the right arrow button to place it in the active list then choose OK. This will take you back to the New Game dialog. Click on the “TFL Gameplay” check box, then choose “Crow’s Bridge” to start playing Myth:TFL.
Myth Online
In the world before 2002, bungie.net was another word for Myth Online Multiplayer Goodness, but in fateful year, the myth server was shut down. However, bungie never lets a good thing die, and they released the server source. Now there are two places for myth players to go: playmyth.net and marius.net.
PlayMyth
Firstly, you will need to register an account. Go to http://playmyth.net/user.php?op=register&module=NS-NewUse r and join up (make a note of your username and password.
Once you have an account set up, you will need to install the playmyth plugins (Note that with the OSX installer of Myth II this will be done for you if you choose). In your Myth II directory, you will find a metaservers directory this contains the plugins required to connect to PlayMyth. Copy the contents of the PlayMyth Classic directory into the plugins directory in your Myth II directory.
MariusNet
I haven’t used MariusNet, but I assume the process is much the same as PlayMyth.
Note that If you have any problems making an account, you should contact playmyth or MariusNet – no one on these forums or bungie can help you with this.
Now all you need to do is launch Myth II, choose Multiplayer Game, Customise your settings, enter your username and password and away you go!
Fear, Loathing and Myth Plugins
One of the reasons why Bungie’s games last for so long is because they are easy to customise, and Myth is no exception. Fear is used to edit the tags (game content) while loathing is used to make, script and populate the levels.
Alterations to Myth are called plugins – there are many on the ‘net. Project Magma have not only been bugfixing the Myth engine, they have also enhanced it, adding features like respawning, TFL physics and new coop maps. Here is some of the more popular mods and where to get them.
The Five Legends
Mazzarin's Demise IV
Requiem of the Dead
WW2
Myth III
Myth III is a game I have not played, and as such is beyond the scope of this howto :P
Suffice to say that Myth III is set 1000 years or so before Myth: The Fallen Lords, and has many of the features and gameplay that exists in Myth I and II. It was written by MumboJumbo for Take 2 interactive.
