My theory goes that....

How the hell did the flood survive for ages down in that containment facility with no food? (thanks SpecOps Grunt for that thought) I thought that no food kills off the flood. Maybe they eat eachother to survive once all other food is gone. Maybe if one flood eats another flood, the victorious flood becomes a bit bigger, stronger and smarter. Therefore, gravemind could be one of those flood that have eaten other flood to survive only to become the biggest fish in the pond and kept eating becoming bigger, stronger and smarter!!!!

They folded out of the system immediately
after I received the message, without so
much as a "Thanks for saving us from
becoming plasma on Tau Ceti, Durandal".

I'm fairly certain that the Flood do not "eat". At least in the sense that we do. They dont even need their hosts heads. Plus we know from the Art of Halo that Gravemind is a collection of dead bodies.

No you have it all wrong!!! The flood dont eat creatures to survive. By destroying all sentient life theyre thirst for knowledge is nothing!!! The flood is a disease/virus searching for knowledge and with nothing for it to feed on (BRAINS) they cant do much of any thing!!!
