Of what KDR do you consider a good player?

  • 04.27.2012 8:07 PM PDT

Last member of the i4Ni clan.

KDR is meaningless.
W/L is meaningless with randnubs.

TOD/heatmaps are generally the only things from stats that will tell you if someone is a good player. Play with someone if you actually want to know how good they are.

The Renaissance Man; The Bigger Fool.

I would say either adaptability, strategy, or going positive.
Adaptability-Being able to adapt to what the enemy is doing.
Strategy-Knowing how people usually play and using that as an advantage.
Going Positive-Not necessarily overall, but in game to be sure.

So basically... Waypoint is pro-vanilla?

Waypoint isn't pro-anything so much as they're just anti-intelligence.

If a player loses to me in MM, they're bad by default.

That being said, "good player" is an extremely subjective term; to a random who searches alone and may not be very aware, somebody who stats in BTB or Objective may appear to be good. To an MLG player, a "good player" may be somebody who knows power positions, map control techniques, objective strategies, etc. very well, along with being a consistent shot.

tl;dr The traits of a "good player" will vary greatly depending on who you ask.

Winner of the 2012 Lurker of the Year award.

I'm watching you.

KDR or any other stat is irrelevant when trying to determine skill. The only "good player" is one who uses common sense, exhibits good communication, isn't a jerk, and has good confidence with their abilities. What a shame that it's rarely the case in online multiplayer.

Completely untrue. I fit all of those requirements, yet I continue to be bad.

You won't get better if you continue to put yourself down like that.

I'm sorry America is busy helping others in the world and actually making a difference.

Something Canada will never do.

Anyone who claims the AR takes skill ought to shoot himself in the head. Preferably with the AR because they'll most likely miss with any other weapon.

Always up for REACH customs!

A good player has a KDR of over 1.0, with the only exceptions being people who are purely dedicated drivers. I've had some games where I go 3-5 but I have 20+ Wheelman medals.

I don't think "I go for the Objective" is a valid excuse for a low KD; you're not getting anywhere near that flag unless you can kill a few people on the way there. It's always fun checking people's KD in Slayer-only playlists when they make that claim.

Another more subjective element of being a good player is being well rounded: have strong competence with every weapon and vehicle, and have knowledge of each map and their important locations.

Teamwork and sacrifice are also elements that a mature good player must have. Someone who sits back and snipes at easy targets to build up killing sprees while ignoring someone shooting at a teammate or someone running away with the flag is a BAD player.

Well, I don't judge a good player by K/D, W/L, or anything of the sort. I play with a bunch of people from here all the time. One of them rarely ever misses a shot with a sniper. The other sacrifices his own K/D because he is the absolute best driver for any of the Halo vehicals, another plays good support roles, one can kill anything with a wraith, etc. Everybody has their special talents and when it all comes together, we usually make an unstoppable Big Team Battle team.

If I remember correctly, one of our gamenights we had somewhere around 23+ matches in a row won. I think we won all but two matches that night.

I play games for gameplay, not silly gimmicks

H3 MM warrior

Reach S7, 8 and 9 arena warrior.

H4 MM legend

There are a number of ways to tell whether or not someone is good.

The best way is to play with them. However over the years I have become exceptional at gauging the talent of players based off what I read on the forums, as well as a few simple stats.

First k/d. Usually under 2 in reach is pretty low.

Second playlists. People who frequent MLG, arena, or the TU playlist are often better than those who play other gametypes. Similarly those who frequent action sack, griffball, and living dead are almost without a doubt awful.

Third MM history. By looking at one or two games that the person has recently lost in you can tell a lot. If they lose to a guest in anything, they are without a doubt awful. If they lose in arena to a team of less than single digit players, they are generally bad. If they lose to a stacked team by only a few kills, and have traded games with them, they are usually good.

And the easiest way to tell, is how they post on the forums. I can almost instantaneously tell whether or not someone is good based off only 1 or 2 posts from someone.

It looks like your personal definition of a "good player" is someone way way above average to begin with. The only real objective definition of "good" is "above average", but you seem to have much higher standards.
