I'll try to narrow the topic to something you people may be able to understand (good on those of you who already can)
Halo CE had massive maps that allowed you to use tactics, sneak past your enemies without having to fight, and flank your opponents in co-op where one person could attack from a different angle as the other.
Halo 2 offered one path and one path alone. You couldn't avoid and battles except with glitches, and your parter would always have to follow the same route as you. Some of the levels looked huge, but all of that space was dead zone where you couldn't go. The entire campaign was essentially a really long hallway.
I'm not a bigtime multiplayer person, so talk to someone else about that. The campaign in Halo CE still amazes me to this very day. The Halo 2 campaign was good the first few times, but it bores me now. The Halo 3 campaign and Halo CE campaign should deffinately not be identical, but the gamplay should seem similar. There should be multiple ways to get around, ways to make a wrong turn and have to backtrack a bit (343 Guilty Spark anyone?) secret pathes that could lead to vehicles or good weapons. Just give it an open feel that you can exploit.
