I feel the title system encourages positive behavior within the bungie.net community.
Many other websites have custom titles, avatars, AND visible signatures. But do we have any of that? Didn't think so. I like how simple the Bungie.net forums are. They much much faster load times and it's easy to have the "hover function" for clicking into different forums.
With simplicity in mind, the title system really is just that. Good behavior = elevated title, bad behavior = decrease in title. Does that mean users that don't have titles are always bad? Absolutely not. They're just silly hats, but they're also a great indicator of behavior that a user has with a specific account.
"Opting out" of forum titles, isn't a bad idea either. Users that want to do this should be entitled too. For me, it helps me recognize a user when they post in a a thread much easier. Forum titles and the title bar is such an eye grabber that you associate with a user's avatar. You can't mess that up when looking for a response in a thread.
The reason so many threads are created about member titles, is because it varies. Believe it or not, there was a time on Bungie.net where forum titles were non existent. We were all the same, and yet we still were judging about each other. We all had our join date below our avatar. "You're an '08 so your opinion is irrelevant!"
The same thing happens today, it's just more noticeable in the main forums because of member titles. (I use the word "noticeable" for good reason)
All in all: Actions speak louder than words. Titles are usually a great indicator on how a member behaves or how long they have stuck around. Opting out of this system isn't a bad idea. I'm actually pretty excited to see what happens in the next site update.
