"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams
First off, lets get this straight: I hate referring to Mass Private Messaging as "Mass Pming", so in this thread I will always refer to it as MPM (Mass Private Messaging).
There is a feature that has been passed around time after time. Many of you know this as Mass Private Messaging. What exactly is MPM? Well, it's a function that allows you to a single private message to multiple users, simultaneously. Think of it as a "M2AF:" on Xbox Live.
Obviously there are many different ideas that need to be taken into account for such a function to exist. Think of it as an "email list" for groups - while it would be awesome, it wouldn't be that efficient since this is just a web developers forum board. The analogy is that you have to be part of that "subscription" or "group" just like any other website to be on the PM list.
MPM would only be available as a function within private groups for high security users.
Have you ever been part of a group where you have X amount of members, but only 20% of X members are usually active? With MPM, I feel that this will keep members up to date on information that is happening within a private group. Imagine the possibilities about reminding people about game-nights, interviews, hot threads, and more.
How would this work?
Simple. Under "Admin Tools" -> "Security Role Editor", you would have a 4th option as a checkbox that would read:
Mass Private Messaging - Can send a single private message to all users in group at a given time. *CAUTION
Awesome! But can this be abused?
Lets be honest, anything on the internet is bound for abuse, if nothing new was implemented because of this, would we get very far? With that said, yes, there is a small chance for some groups to abuse MPM. However, groups that do abuse MPM probably aren't going to be a successful group anyways.
If you feel that you're being spammed with MPM, there are a couple steps you can do to prevent this:
(In order of recommended priority)
1. "Opt out" of receiving MPM's for that group - from Capt Stoneheart
2. Block the account
3. Leave the group
Notice how MPM is only for within private groups. If you're granted this permission in a private group, you would NOT be able to MPM anyone that is outside of your group. EVER. You can't just "spam" people in the mains for group invites. Members of your private group are the only users eligible to receive a MPM.
Conclusion:
MPM is something I know that many people have been asking for, for a long time. I was actually surprised that bungie.net didn't already have this function to begin with. If Mass Private Messaging is only a function that would occur within groups, this will only bring out tightly knit community together through regular updates.
It will only make the rich, richer and the poor poorer. This is a tool that when used correctly, can wield outstanding benefits. But when it's abused and spammed, it will only cause negative feedback and cause members to block or even leave your group.
Thoughts?
