Subject: Mass Private Messaging: A new function for private chapters only

@spawn031

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

First off, lets get this straight: I hate referring to Mass Private Messaging as "Mass Pming", so in this thread I will always refer to it as MPM (Mass Private Messaging).

There is a feature that has been passed around time after time. Many of you know this as Mass Private Messaging. What exactly is MPM? Well, it's a function that allows you to a single private message to multiple users, simultaneously. Think of it as a "M2AF:" on Xbox Live.

Obviously there are many different ideas that need to be taken into account for such a function to exist. Think of it as an "email list" for groups - while it would be awesome, it wouldn't be that efficient since this is just a web developers forum board. The analogy is that you have to be part of that "subscription" or "group" just like any other website to be on the PM list.

MPM would only be available as a function within private groups for high security users.

Have you ever been part of a group where you have X amount of members, but only 20% of X members are usually active? With MPM, I feel that this will keep members up to date on information that is happening within a private group. Imagine the possibilities about reminding people about game-nights, interviews, hot threads, and more.

How would this work?
Simple. Under "Admin Tools" -> "Security Role Editor", you would have a 4th option as a checkbox that would read:
Mass Private Messaging - Can send a single private message to all users in group at a given time. *CAUTION

Awesome! But can this be abused?
Lets be honest, anything on the internet is bound for abuse, if nothing new was implemented because of this, would we get very far? With that said, yes, there is a small chance for some groups to abuse MPM. However, groups that do abuse MPM probably aren't going to be a successful group anyways.

If you feel that you're being spammed with MPM, there are a couple steps you can do to prevent this:

(In order of recommended priority)
1. "Opt out" of receiving MPM's for that group - from Capt Stoneheart
2. Block the account
3. Leave the group

Notice how MPM is only for within private groups. If you're granted this permission in a private group, you would NOT be able to MPM anyone that is outside of your group. EVER. You can't just "spam" people in the mains for group invites. Members of your private group are the only users eligible to receive a MPM.

Conclusion:
MPM is something I know that many people have been asking for, for a long time. I was actually surprised that bungie.net didn't already have this function to begin with. If Mass Private Messaging is only a function that would occur within groups, this will only bring out tightly knit community together through regular updates.

It will only make the rich, richer and the poor poorer. This is a tool that when used correctly, can wield outstanding benefits. But when it's abused and spammed, it will only cause negative feedback and cause members to block or even leave your group.

Thoughts?

Let's be honest here, how would this contribute to the website?

Is there any other "Cons" than being abused?

More importantly, will this affect the server Bungie have? There's an anti-spam filter up running to prevent user spamming message through forum and private messaging under thirty seconds.

I think it could contribute a lot. Some easy examples I can think of:

-reminding people of a gamenight
-important update about the group
-seeing who is still active
-e.t.c.

By allowing this within groups, it would either encourage more users to actually participate within their groups, or leave them. Bringing the community and looking for site updates is something that many have been looking for, for quite sometime.

Is there any other "Cons" than being abused?
Thinking off the top of my head, no. If people use this to send 50 messages a day to their group members, chances are that people are going to leave the group or block the account. Since it's for high security users anyways, in a typical group setup, only 1-2 users would be granted this permission anyways.

More importantly, will this affect the server Bungie have? There's an anti-spam filter up running to prevent user spamming message through forum and private messaging under thirty seconds.
The PM system has been updated to allow 1 pm every 7-10 seconds rather than 30. As for effecting Bungie servers? I have no idea. That would be something that only the webteam would know.

I have seen you future

I see nothing wrong with this. It allows people to contact everyone in their group efficiently. There is no real downside, since abuse would result in the same things as other bad group management (excessive banning, etc.), everyone would leave. I like this idea.

Extremely annoying.

So you can do the two steps I listed above to not receive group updates.

1. Block the account
2. Leave the group

As for me, I'll be enjoying getting my weekly PM update (For example) for my groups that include game-nights, hot threads, new activities etc.

That's not a bad suggestion either. Will add to the OP.

I have a neat idea. If notifications came into play, whenever a group posts a news story, that notification would be sent to all members. I would think that that would be less intensive on Bungie than sending out a MPM.

I feel like this would really help the private group scene that is, with the exception of a select few communities, dying rapidly ever since Bungie went dark a few months ago.

An admin can only hope that the web team will hear the countless people who have called for this feature and finally give it to us in the next update.

  • 04.29.2012 6:31 PM PDT

So, ideally, it's just a listserv. Those are really easy to set up, and most spambots take advantage of the technology. It'd be a good idea, but I feel like it would result in a mass spamming.

More notifications!!!! In a sense that would function the same way as MPM. As you mentioned, perhaps it may be less intensive on the server side for Bungie. (although, no one except the web team really knows the answer to that)

Agreed! This function has been mentioned many times in one form or another. Now that we know the next site update is right around the corner, better late than never to get these ideas out there.

I've always wanted this feature, especially in the form that the OP has described it.

I don't think that we should keep fretting over whether or not it'll mess with the site itself.

Anyways, I would really like it for several groups I'm in. As long as there's an "opt out" button, I'm totally cool with this.

I must agree. I have also been thinking, why don't we coordinate a bnet wishlist thread. A huge thread that contains all the stuff we want and a very good description for them all. Anyways putting aside that thought I beleive this feature would be great. I have never been a leader of a big group but I know that many groups have this problem. This along with a notification system, sent box, 25 day group join request expiration and total posts ever made should be added. I think we can alla gree that this stuff should be added in the next big update.

Woah. Thanks for directing me. I didn't realize that was there. I haven't even seen that thread yet. I am going to look it over and see if there is anything that could be added.

  • 04.29.2012 8:56 PM PDT

Agreed, that would be very handy. Prehaps, if people don't want PMs then they could have an option on their profile settings whith a check box saying 'Enable/Disable MPM'.

I like this, I like it a lot.
