Gettin' all Herodotean up in here!

I think CoD will sell in huge numbers (just like always).
The only thing is that Halo 4 doesn't have a lot of popularity.
There are no huge campaigns around it and even I, being quite a Halo fan, am not really excited for it (in the same way I was for the previous Halo's). I think at least some of that's probably true for everyone who's been with the franchise since the beginning. I remember how stoked I was for Halo 2, and I dropped every dime I had at the time on the Legendary edition for Halo 3. By comparison, I can't remember off the top of my head what Halo 4's release date is.
Part of it may be the relative dearth of media despite the fact that we're, what, less than seven months out? Waypoint's only got three or four screenshots, and to my knowledge they're not really feeding out information beyond a couple of vids. Part of it could also be the fact that we're all here, rather than on the Waypoint forums. And some of us have probably just lost interest. I'm so behind on the peripheral elements of the Halo Universe that I've essentially given up, and I'm just waiting for Bungie to roll out Destiny so I can try and stay caught up from the beginning.
I think 343i waited too long before giving something away about H4. Probably also true, at least to some extent. It could also just be that we're all ready for something different. We've had almost eleven years of Halo. Bungie figured out right around Halo 3 that they wanted do something new. Maybe the community's starting to feel that now, too. Hell, even the major overhauls 343i's giving the franchise could be indicators that they've perceived this and are looking to make things different enough to keep people interested.
More on the topic at hand;
I don't necessarily think it's a competition, and I'm sure the people who are actually making the games don't feel that way, either. Any Bungie employees floating around can confirm or deny this, but I'm guessing that they don't go to work every day thinking, "Okay, how can we run those sons of whores who make CoD into soul-crushing bankruptcy?" That may be how the publishers think, particularly in their higher corporate echelons, but down in the trenches I'm guessing there's a certain degree of brotherhood.
And it's not like the people at 343i want the only enjoyable game around to be the one they made. Think of how boring that would be. I'm sure they'd really rather play CoD or Gears, simply on the fact that they can enjoy those games as games, not work. Not to say they don't play their own games, just that I'm sure they play, and want to play, other studios' games as well.
