Subject: Who else thought up of S-IVs as volunteers?

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.

Before Glasslands was released, a few friends and I thought up of how a Spartan-IV program would work. We all generally agreed that it would be comprised of volunteers or at least of ODSTs who would be augmented.
It seems 343i thought the same thing.
Who else thought of a similar idea for the Spartan-IV program?

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

They should've stopped with the SPARTAN-III Program.

According to Ghosts of Onyx and the Halo Encyclopedia Delta Company was already recruited and training had begun. The problem is that Onyx was destroyed and I doubt all those kids survived.
Gamma Company was out doing some mission but we have no idea if they're either dead, mostly dead, or still alive.
Kurt had described that eventually regular soldiers and possibly civilians could be augmented.
The Spartan-IV program makes a bit more sense than S-IIIs. S-IIIs are comprised of kids who are trained for 7 years and then are expected to die soon after. Augmenting existing soldiers to become better makes a lot more sense and wouldn't require so much secrecy and would probably be cheaper.

Quite the contrary. They need to do a lot of research (how they found the time to even do the research with everything going on -- I don't know) to be able to make regular soldiers augmented. One of the primary reason they recruited young was because they couldn't augment men who were already soldiers.

The opinion that augmenting existing soldiers are better is definitely arguable. They may be existing soldiers, but the Spartans were trained since they were 4-7 years old. The existing soldiers don't even compare to the training those kids received.

ODSTs went through the closest kind of training that Spartans would have had. There is no difference between IIIs and IVs except one began training as a kid. The last couple of S-III companies all passed their augmentations so there's your testing. Also S-III augmentations are more chemical while S-IIs had surgical. I'm sure S-IVs had chemical like IIIs.

But the Spartan IV program does use kids as far as I know...
They just get permission from the parents this time, instead of asking the kids.

I think you got it wrong, it's volunteers already enlisted in the UNSC. So basically ODSTs, Marines, etc. not kids.

Where did this information come from exactly?

Near the end when Parangosky is talking to Halsey.

Ah, found it, not very specific, but I get what you're talking about now.

Also it would make sense for the UNSC to make S-IVs after the war. They got their asses kicked and nearly defeated. Only a few Spartans remain and if worse comes to worse, they're gonna need some new super soldiers. S-IVs is the next logical step.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Meh, might as well take all the marines and convert them to S-IV's.

Seems do-able.

I doubt it's that easy. They'll only select the absolute best of the ODSTs, probably, so that the resulting SPARTAN-IVs are the best they can be.

I'm really interested in this SPARTAN-IV program. The UNSC Infinity with the SPARTAN-IVs could really tip the balance of power in the galaxy.

^Maybe when SPARTAN-Vs come out in Halo 6. Any humans enlisted in the military can turn Super-solidier.

And the Spartan IV will actually be cheaper now than the Spartan III program was.

Sure, as with each iteration of the Spartan program, the cost of refining the augmentation process while still keeping the results of the program on an equal level with the S-II & S-III programs would be expensive.

But once the refining process is done, the actual cost to churn out augmented super-soldiers is far, far cheaper than the S-II prog. and still even cheaper than the S-III prog.

They've alluded to this in the lore surrounding the S-III's, and again at the end of Glasslands when they were making the comparison with having to have young children for the S-II's but they can utilize full grown Military volunteers for the S-IV's.

I orignally thought that Spartan IVs were volunteer soldiers. Like the best of the best ODST's like Mal, Vaz and Buck or even Marines. Dont' know how expensive it would be though when compared to the other 2 projects, there not working with children anymore, full grown adults who've already grown up.
missions?

Would've been nice not to have a bunch more Noble Teams out there.

I get the feeling that this Spartan 4 program has a huge flaw in it. It seems not thought through.

I honestly don't see the difference in performance between a Spartan-III and IV. They're both comprised of "normal" people. Except when S-IIIs go out on their first missions they are about 14 and not that experienced. A Spartan-IV is a Marine who possibly already has experience and is physically mature.
I guarantee you that a ODST who's been augmented and given this new lightweight MJOLNIR armor would out perform a member of Noble Team anyday.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

You do understand the entire point of the spartan project was to go back to adults right? So you didn't do anything but read up on TFoR on halopedian.

  • 05.04.2012 6:00 PM PDT

I think the greatest Spartans are the ones that are chosen, rather than those who volunteer. They receive equal or better training for a longer amount of time. Also, by being chosen it ensures that Spartans are the best, of the best... Of the best.

Spartan IVs... Just don't seem like the Spartans we have all come to know and love.
