POSIBILTY: the ark is broken. the flood cannot be defeated. the light in the trailer dims after the trailer finishes.

I wouldn't think that the Ark is broken, if in fact that is what it is. But that there may be some significant structural damage (atleast internally). I think the dimming of the light is only due to the fact that the energy pulse we witnessed in the trailer had ended (maybe to be followed by more pulses, much like the ones witnessed in Halo:CE).

UPDATE: Apparently the structure in the trailer is indeed the Ark. It matches up with images that can be found on the Halo 2 spec. ed. DVD that are labeled as such. No wonder Bungie said we'd recognize it.

If we can have genetically enhanced soldiers, extremely intelligent AIs, huge spaceships, MAC cannons, ring worlds, aliens, etc, I think we can have an ancient structure located in an area with high levels of seismic activity. I think we can all file this under "thinking way too much about a videogame".

I am...whimsical today.

I thought the Artifact was found to be in the South East of Kenya? As far as I know the Rift Valley is in the center West running North to South, and the Artifact was between Mt Kj and Mombasa?

You are quite correct. But the Ark does lay on the eastern most edge of this region which borders with an even older Rift Zone that formed the Red Sea and Madagascar. This region experiences significant levels of earthquake activity.

If Covenant cruisers blow-up/down many human cruisers, does it create a massive explosion like in Halo 1? If so. Man, you can easily blow up a whole planet :D

Hmm, thats interesting. I'd say that the Artifact would have its supply of little sentinel robot fixer type things. Altho the concept of exploring a half damaged Forerunner Artifact does appeal to me. There is just something about going down a passage saying 'SUPER SECRET WEAPON KILLS EVERYTHING!' only to find it has caved in...

...alright it may not be a pleasant feeling, but its a feeling nonetheless :)

Just to back this up a little bit here is a link to a map of Seismic Hazards in Africa provided by the USGS. I think you'll find this quite illuminating. If you compare it with the googlearth pic of the supposed location of the Ark, you'll notice that the Ark would lie on the edge of a seismically active region.

USGS Map of Seismic Hazards, Africa Region

Here is a Seismicity Map as well:

Wouldent human have already know that the sturucture was there? I mean they have scimic scanners for Earthquakes and such, and in one of the places with the most sicemic activity woulden't they have picked up on a blip on there radar shwoing some sort of structure buried under grouned? And the Structure was not evne that far under ground. The chance humans would have already know about the so called "Ark' is very likly.

Oh yeah it's just a game..... you can't expect everything to be perfect.

And i would probley agree that they're some sort of Sentnails makeking repaires when and where nessicary.

Maybe, just maybe, in this fictional world, the ark/forerunner thing/whateverthefudgeitreallyis Is emitting immense amounts of power from its reactors, causing this seizmic activities, and we just called it regular earthquakes because we didnt know to look for or detect forerunner stuff on our own planet

Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to cede the point about the Sentinels, the more I think about it, the more likely. But we may not have noticed the Ark due to its immense size. It's a matter of the relative size. We have technology that allows us to look into the ground but it doesn't resolve larg objects very well at all. The crater in the Yucatan (thought to have brought about the extinction of the dinosaurs) was very difficult to detect. Kinda like seeing the forest or the trees. It's so large we may not have discerned its structure in geological surveys.

EDIT: That's an interesting idea Hahnzo.

Hey, Raptorian brings up a great point. Guys, don't just say "Hey it's just a game." With the amount of [apparent] background search that Bungie's done, the chances that they just overlooked this factor is small. If they have, then, well, nuts to them, guess it'll just get ignored. But, as Raptorian said, from a scientific standpoint, there would be serious issues.

Then again, if it can withstand the heat from being that far down, who knows what it could withstand?

That's what I'm trying to get at here. A little intelligent discussion. Most people just wanna write it off and talk about things that should be in the game. But I believe that the Campaign mode is probably complete, atleast for the most part. So their requests will fall on deaf ears.

In response to your comment, Caboose, I believe that heat doesn't become a serious issue until you reach a depth of 11-13km. I think anyways. I'll have to go double check.

LOOK at it this way: people saw War of the Worlds and bought that Aliens were burried under every major city in the world... WHERE DO OUR SEWER PIPES GO?!?! did they dig AROUND the aliens? Just go with the flow.

To Raptorian: Most likely, especially against certain metals, but all I know is that 100 ft down (I went in a mine once) and it went up a couple degrees. There have been stories of miners dieing of heat exhaustion due to the extreme heat down 100s of ft. Admittedly, 100 degrees isn't enough to melt metal, but it could still cause problems.

To Wuyie: Don't flame. If you think this is stupid, just leave.

ALSO who knows when the ark was put in earth? Maybe it was built ONTOP of earth and the shifting continents burried it. Even if it was on the surface of earth when it was constructed, it must have been covered in millions of years of layers which formed around it.

Gauss Cannon Ownage

I will, however, confirm that the Assault Rifle fires projectiles. At the moment, at least. We might just end up turning it into a melee-only weapon.

That was a joke.

Or maybe the activity could be caused by the f/runner thing...

That's true Caboose, I forgot about that. I've been down a few mines myself. Might prove to be an issue for Sentinels though, depending on how deep the structure is anyways.

In the trailer, it looked to be pretty far down. I'd say upwards of nearly half a mile. But that may just be the surface; What if that is just the tip of the iceberg?

I'd imagine the structure has got a crap load of levels to it. Pretty deep, I'd say. A half-mile sounds about right for the trailer.

Ah yes, imagine the immense pressure on it also. It would have to be insanely strong and well built to withstand that much pressure upon it. Either that, or we're playing in the universe of Journey to the Center of the Earth.

I'm hoping that this was taken into consideration while designing the game. It would make for some nice levels where you could just collapse an entire floor of the structure to defeat your enemies. It could add a nice element of destructable environments as well.

I remember the promise of destructible environments in Halo 2. That, and, sprinting. The ATV... man I'm glad they aren't promising too much too early. It was depressing to not have destructible environments. As for collapsing roofs... oh yeah. That'd be great.
