I swear though, if they have a river of lava flowing just below the bottom-most level of the Ark and we have to fight some boss character and make him fall in there, I'm gonna spill my guts on the floor with my own fooking knife.

While tectonic forces are great in compression and slip type faults, the forces are less in rifting type faults.

Modern day engineers are capable of building structures that can withstand intense seismic activity. Im sure that the Forerunners, given thier advanced technology, could have engineered a structure that could withstand the seismic strains that were placed upon it.

Now there's an intelligent counterpoint. I was just checking into that myself. Although engineers have become more adept at the development/construction of earthquake resistant materials and buildings, they usually only stand up to seismic forces on the lower to middle of the richter scale. Considering that each single point increase on the scale represents a tenfold increase in seismic magnitude. But your point is still valid. Looking more closely at the seismic maps of Africa I referenced earlier, most quakes in the region fall under a 1.0 rating (mainly between .33 and .5 if I remember correctly). It is still possible that extended exposure to such forces on a geologic time scale would have its consequences. But I'm more inclined, now, to believe that the structure is fairly resilient to such forces without suffering more than just the most superficial damage.

I have no idea what I'm saying is intelligent or not...

When the PoA blew, it blew on the part of Halo that was mostly natural [ soil, rocks, remember the ship crashed in a desert ]. Sure, up to a certain level only, but Halo was spinning at an equal to Earth's spin rate, but it was a nuclear+fusion core explosion. Name me a material that is nuke-resistant, the Covenant ships are made of Forerunner metal as well and unshielded they ain't particularly resistant to a nuclear explosion...

It still doesn't make the structure safe from geological forces, which don't necessarilly stop in a short period of time. The rifts in Africa have always been there and have been shaping the continent since the break up of Pangaea. I'm just trying to point out that it is something to consider. the structure may not be in pristine condition. It could be an interesting environment to play in.

There you go. Just because it would be perfect if it was there, doesn't mean it isn't there. Besides, any damage it took could be getting repaired from those baby sentinals. Remember them from the Wall in Halo 2? The structure could be in a constent state of getting damaged and repaired at the same time. That's something to think about.

This much is true, nuclear fission (and I'd imagine fusion as well) based explosion generate enormous amounts of heat and electromagnetic radiation of all sorts. Metals being good conductors (usually) and even alloys are easily damaged/destroyed/vaporized in such an explosion. I say explosion, but I should really say implosion, because nuclear weapons rely on implosive forces to generate so much force. I'd have to agree that Forerunner constructs are probably quite vulnerable to nuclear fission/fusion strikes.

Well it could just be the source of all of the seismic activity. So it wouldn't do any damage to itself, but would cause all of the earthquakes across the Rift Valley.

I always find it funny when someone plays a game that involves in no particular order, talking penguins and gorillas, walking lizards, laser beams and Dyson Spheres, teleportation, alien races and a hero who jumps off a spaceship in the middle of a intergalatic battle with A BOMB and NO JET PACK OR PROPULSION whatsoever to deliver it to another spaceship by hand and then jump off that bomb to launch himself back into space...points out "Hey...Africa doesnt have mountains there.."....-SLAP-....Its like watching at Willy Wonka and going "This is so silly because everyone knows a tugboat couldnt float in chocolate that shallow"....

LMAO

Good thread BTW

The following body of text does not originate from Bungie, is not intended to represent the story line, and is a product of conjecture by the author.

The structure under Africa was finished by the Forerunners after almost all the Halo's were completed. The latest advancements of the Forerunner civilization were put into Earth's artifact due to it's importance, many lessons learned during the construction of the Halo's lead to the best design given the site requirement on Earth. Due to the technological requirements for the location of the artifact, which would eventually be under a planets surface, the most exacting design specifications were followed to reinforce the artifact for practically any event.

Currently, the seismic distrubances experianced in the location in question, are actually caused by the artifact to prevent the inablilty of the device to be used. In effect, the aritfact is loosening the earth above it in readiness to be activated. Also, a side effect of power consumption, the artifact currently bores into the Earth's core using the immense heat found there for energy. It is necessary to frequently renew the shafts as they become blocked with time, which also adds the to sesmic activity in the area.

The drilling is the single most hazardous task facing the Forerunners on the Earth installation. The population, averaging around one hundred thousand strong, frequently faces near genetic disasters as necessary drilling and mining tasks often claim the lives of many citizens.

Some higher level civilizations believe that the remaining Forerunners purposefully encouraged their genetics upon the life on Earth. Fresh genetic stock to clone new Forerunners would be readily availiable in such a situation, and a burgeoning new race has been discovered capable of becoming a higher level civilization in itself.

I am a huge fan of the TV series Lost. I just found this on a Lost fansite and was wondering if this might play a part in your theory about the seismic disturbances, as well as to maybe explain the location of this structure. one creating the other. check it out:

"In 1999 the 'Oersted' satellite was launched with the purpose of charting Earth's magnetic field. The findings led scientists to believe that there might be a polar reversal imminent, the effects of which could be cataclysmic: if Earth were to lose its magnetosphere, it would be vulnerable to massive radiation from the space/sun. The satellite also revealed an anomaly in the magnetic field under South Africa; it is pointing the opposite direction from the rest of the Earth's field and has been growing for hundreds of years."

magnetic field pointing in the opposite direction from the rest of the Earth's field? maybe the artifact retaining power for activation? or simply using the planet's magnetic field to power itself and continue to run?

Who cares...?

For anyone who is consistently asking this question, I would kindly ask you to stop.

Obviously, the thread poster cares, obviously Mr. AlexZander cares, and there are others like myself who probably read this for enjoyment. Just because analyzing facts that won't matter in real life looks stupid doesn't mean its not fun. Look at the whole sports world.
Just because is a game doesn't mean it should go random and disobey certain facts without plausible answers.

It might be just a game, but some of us are trying to get the best bang for our buck.

That theory, while plausible, is a stretch. Geologic evidence suggests that due to the inverse square nature of magnetic fields, the alignment of the magnetic molecules in new lava is more heavily governed by the magnetic fields within the previous bed of lava than the magnetic field of the Earth.

Thus, the geologic record shows that these pole reversals have taken place without the reversal of the Earths magnetic field.

There is evidence showing that the Earths magnetic field has weakened from 2.5gauss in the time of the dinosaurs to .5 gauss currently.

Spage, Loki and Twinkie: I just want to thank you for your interest and participation. I just wanted to try and generate an intelligent discussion that involves the halo universe, since there is so much out there that is complete and total bs.

I also really like the theories being put forth about how the Ark is affecting this particular region in Africa, quite inventive and reasonable, even though this is a fictional construct. Very cool, indeed.

you know, they did totally destroy a halo with just an explosion of a fusion reactor. Many thousands of years of earthquakes are gonna play heel with any sturcture, no matter how strong.

Don't you think that Bungie could twist the story so that the Forerunner thingy could be making the earthquakes?

Quite a few people feel that exact way about the construct. It's definitely a possibility. It would be cool if Bungie through that in there. One of the main ideas in this thread is the level of research Bungie does when adding elements to their games. So we're wondering how indepth Bungie has gone with this particular earthly location.

I don't think it to be very likely any more after reading this thread, but here goes my thought on the matter:

Given the advanced technology of the Forerunners, and their high intelligence, I believe that they would have known the location for the Ark was a highly seismic area and that they could use that to their advantage. Perhaps the Forunners some how built the Ark to move along with the constantly shifting land after analyzing it's geometric movements (I don't know if thats possible but please stay with me). #1) The given area would make a great defense to keep out anyone who wanted to activate (or anything else) the Ark. #2) If the Forerunners did indeed create the Ark to move with the geometric movement of the land, then could it not be possible for them to build certain parts of the Ark on pieces of land that would appear to have been stable/safe from seismic activity? After a period of time the whole Ark would come togeather as one, thus resulting in it being ready for activation, but only by certain circumstances taking place somewhere else. By this I'am reffering to the end of Halo 2. When Keyes removed the index from Delta Halo it set off, if you will, a signal that readied the other installations to be activated from one location (The Ark).

I would say that upon that event the Ark, which has been causing more seismic activity from segments of it moving the land to it's will, moved itself into position to be activated.

NOTE: I apologize if my idea has contradicted itself, or anything else, in anyway. I often get caught up in my ideas as I write them down and do such things.

Raptor, I notice where you keep repeating that you wanted this thread to be an intelligent discussion. I don't know whether my idea follows along with what you want, but I hope for the best that it does, and gives you more ideas.<---(In other words, I'm saying that I hope you don't shoot my idea down, but still think I have a good point of view.)

I admire people (As well as Twinkie and everyone else who has posted great theories on this thread) that have such intelligence and take time to research these things. This post has been a great read. Props to you all.

No, this is a sweet little theory you got rolling PoD Spartan.

I just keep repeating here and there cause of people who post about how we "think about this too much" or "it's just a game." It's just for fun and food for thought.
