It's pretty simple really.

In the time before the Covenant war, the UNSC's only real threat was the Insurection.

The Insurection didn't have any tanks.

The Scorpion is designed for maximum survivability from IED's and hand held AT weapons, that's why it is so immense despite it's tiny crew. It's just covered in slabs of Titanium A.

The turret is raised to provide a better field of fire in an urban combat zone.

The main gun fires relatively small caliber HE shells, perfect for blowing out one room without major collateral damage.

This explains the awkward shape, strange configuration and small gun.

This is all my speculation, but I see it as a logical explanation, and sound counter to the "LOLABRAMSCUDPWNSCORPIONLOL" mentality. what do you guys think of this?

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

- "Cross of Iron"

Actually i would argue that the scorpions turret design is to facilitate a defensive hull-down position. Its turret is elevated which would allow to be dug in and able to fire over its cover, while it keeps the rest of itself protected.

That too, but it could also fire over walls as tall, or taller than a man, often found in urban combat.

Isn't it also officially a "light" tank?

The first halo game had no backstory (books/extended universe), the Scorpion was designed in terms of gameplay, we can't have a neigh invincible tank now can we?

A month before, so Halo is technically a book series adapted to game...

This. Perfect example was at the defense of Alpha Base on Alpha Halo when the ODST's had dug trenches for the Scorpions up hill. Gave them maximum protection while allowing them rain hell upon the slowly and extremely exposed infantry.

Plus, the Scorpions armor was also outfitted with titanium-ceramic plating to better defend it from small arms fire, to which it was nearly invulnerable.

Still using a pump-action shotgun over 500 years in the future I see.

omg not realistic stop game production plz

I think like Roberto said, the Scorpion isn't really the heaviest armour the UNSC can put out; it's just easy to construct, powerful, and does the job just fine.

VERY much like the T-34 Russian Tank from World War II. The Germans had superior Tiger tanks. In a one on one, a Tiger tank could always destroy a T-34 tank. The difference, however, was that for every Tiger tank the Germans assembled, the Russians could have built something like 3 or 4. Essentially, in every combat situation the Germans fielded a Tiger tank, the Russians had at least 3 T-34s which easily overwhelmed the Tiger.

About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

But in reality the Scorpion wouldn't BE good in urban environments! The turret traverses so FAR from the body that in a narrow street it couldn't turn its gun.

However, yeah I agree, it was designed for lightness and for targeting Innie targets.

The Hu-Cov War would have been COMPLETELY different if Marine Corps R&D had pulled their head out of their asses and developed weapons and vehicles for use in CONVENTIONAL war rather than just MOUT. At LEAST a rifle that can reach out to 600 yards and a tank with a freaking 120mm smoothbore.

While we're at it, just remove all Titanium A from every vehicle in the UNSC, think about it, we know that against plasma its as good as tissue paper, so take it off tanks, hogs, hell even destroyers and frigates, and maybe they'll be light enough to at least outrun Covenant vehicles.

Waypoint Moderators aren't really Moderators, just power hungry and its goal is defend their beloved Halo at all costs. (Meaning that they wank Halo too much.)

BS Angel is alleged foe so, be wary of Waypoint and its moderators! Do not attempt to move to Waypoint. Enter your own risk.

*WARNING* IT IS MY OPINION.

Replace it with what? Ablative armor? Tungsten Carbide? Carbon Nanotubes?

Let's face it- Titanium-A is lightweight and stronger than normal titanium, thus cheaper for UNSC to spam out units from R & D

Nothing.

It doesn't provide much protection, so why bother at all?

Um... are you serious?

Ablative armor, Tungsten Carbide and Carbon Nanotubes have higher boiling/vaporization/heat point than Titanium-A. So, yes it offers more protection.

lol I'm not the one saying it, but they always do seem to die in one hit, so he kind of has a point.

Exactly, they die in one hit. Were they using other stuff, they probably would have melted before the plasma even hit them.

That literally makes no sense.

He's saying it's like running around a modern battlefield with a vest of bricks on, they do little to stop enemy fire and are very heavy.

It would probably be worth the loss in protection for the mobility increase.

No, it is in fact, a heavy ground combat vehicle.
