It wouldn't be the first time this site has deleted old accounts. Presumably anyone who left that long ago should be aware of the fact that account deletion was a possibility for extended periods of inactivity.Actually I was referring to the posts made about groups just above.
Regardless, how do you determine what accounts should be deleted?Well, what determined the deletion of the older accounts long ago?
I think it was a year of inactivity. But the old system is irrelevant, because people clearly didn't like it. What's the point of going through old threads if you can't even tell who the -blam!- wrote anything in it?
And you always hear stories about people who are on to their second account due to the deletion of their old one. Re-implementing the old system would only make people upset. That's not what I was talking about at all. If the old system went of something as simple as "a year of inactivity" and it was good enough to be implemented, whether later deemed a mistake or not, then an expansion on it with more strict requirements shouldn't have as much, let alone more, collateral damage and backlash. That was all I was mentioning.
Nevertheless, I still do not think deleting dead groups or old accounts is as simple, in terms of action and reaction, as most of you think it is. There is a reason the old system was scrapped, per se. So just because more restrictions could be put in place and even then maybe only once doesn't mean it will necessarily be better or welcomed. Satisfying a large populous is a very tricky feat, and to do it on a consistent basis with constant name-changing would be asking a lot.
Imagine trying to change your name and you pick a name of an account that was a previously known troll. Look at all the unavailable names out there now, and look at all the ones that will be out there if a name-change system was implemented. Should they allow you to change back? Should they allow you to change more than once? Should they have a system for permanent member recognition to coincide with name-changing and associated profiles? Would they have to implement "Friends" so you can keep track of those you'd like to talk to that often change their names? How often would names have to be reset to cope with a thousand new names a month? (Etc. Etc. Etc...)
Take me for an example. When I was new to the site oh so many years ago I tried to link my GT resulting in 4 new profiles all variations of "G01D3N M0NK3Y". I then got a new Xbox profile and linked "Horseman of War" to it. Later boredom, negligence, and a new-found liking pushed me to create "MLP Rainbow Dash"... of which I can no longer access because that same boredom led me through a series of unfortunate clicking accidents and I no longer know that Windows Live ID email or password. So here I am again, with about my sixth (give or take) Bungie profile, unknown to most.
And even though I would like the original "Rainbow Dash" name, I may not go for it if it opened up because I may be confused with an old, returning Rainbow Dash (although I hear he will not be returning under that name ever).
Back to the beginning:
So how do you decide which gets opened up?
Do you count the names of Permabanned accounts? If yes, how would that conflict with Ban appeals?
What is considered dead for a profile? Years?
Questions like that, if answered would have had to been discussed for a while now between the people making the new system (if they are) and tested thoroughly before release. If one is to be implemented as soon as some of us are hopeful for, the decisions most likely have already been made anyway.
The way I see it, Bungie tries its best to listen to its community but knows when to draw the line. Where Bungie placed that line, and how long ago that line was drawn we will find out in time.
OT: If you want my opinion -and I apologize for over saturating you with it just moments ago- I would love for some of the ideas discussed here to become reality, but I don't see how they can efficiently make it so.
...and if they do, I tip my hat to them.
