The Halo Graphic Novel, co written by Bungie and Marvel, comes out on July 12 and one of the 4 main stories details how this happened...buy it...what interests me more is the last big comic, though, that details why exactly the Covenant first only attacked New Mombassa...which will help set up for the next novel, due out this fall, and Halo 3.

The damn cutscene with Johnson and the Elite was a joke. He actually somehow got to a Pelican and... then the book of First Strike happens.

Squee they explain the events between the flood encounter in Halo CE and him getting found on the Pelican in First Strike in the Halo Graphic Novel...I wish it was July :)

It's in the books, but what he does is hitch a ride on a pelican with some other marines. He wasn't eaten by flood because he has a rare disease that makes him "taste bad".
