It's not so much that it could be abused, it's that its unnecessary and would ruin the look of the forums. Hyperlinking works much better.
But with hyperlinking, it's easy to disguise bad things.
The only way to really disguise bad links is to use a URL shortener; but even then you can make a guess as to whether or not you choose to click, by taking other things into account (recent join date, other peoples warnings, etc).
With imbedding images, you get no such chance, as the moment the image loads within someone's post you don't have a chance to not see it; so it'd be an easier option to be used by people posting NSFW to get a response by other users. I don't think you can block such images with ease either, as they can be circumvented with URL shortners, too.
