Ok... So a lot of people have noticed / complained / speculated / worried about the MC and his Suit going from green to a dull golden-brown color.

If you notice the second Wallpaper that Bungie has hosted you can get a pretty good look at the MC. look at all the new scratches and dents in his Suit as well as the mud splashes on his feet.

Now I don't know if this is Canon or not... but in the books The Spartan's MJOLNIR Sheilds produce a kind of a vacuum between the Suit and where the Shield is located. There should be no dust / or mud on the MC's Suit... UNLESS his shields have somehow malfunctioned.
This would explain the dull color and mud on the Suit.
So either Bungie was giving us (the fans) a big hint as to the MC's situation, or I need to stop looking so far into things.

Either way, its something to think about.
: )

:::::::UPDATES::::::

1. In other opinions, it is reflection of the area around him. I say, not that much. ::: there could be RTL involved in the color change, but its too worn to be all lighting and reflection. ::::

2. In other opinions, its because he has been through hell and high water between Halo 2, and the Trailer. ::: I think that may have contrubited, but could not have caused the amount of ware to his suit that is shown in the trailer. :::::

3. In other opinions, its because the dust is getting through his shields. To this I say :::: That can't happen, what good are shields for then? His shields can protect him against the vacuum of space, why would dust get through? ::::

Interesting. Are you sure the "Vacuum between shield and armor" is true?

Well, when his shields go down his armour can get splattered with mud and the like. I'm just saying that perhaps, during battle, his shield just got drained and he sustained damage. And the mud looks more like plasma scorches to me. And the reason why his armour is that colour is because of the lighting...

"I'm hungry..."

I think its just supposed to be the result of nonstop fighting since Halo 2. After Halo 1, MC got to change his armor. After Halo 2, I don't think he's going to get to. Whether its one hundred percent realistic when compared to the supposed capabilities of MC's armor or not, I think its just battle-worn. Think about every time you got shot with your shields down in Halo 2, though. I'm fairly certain that would do a number on it.

It is not because of the lighting. Under the sun, the full light spectrum is present; therefore, his suit would look like his actual color. The change in color is probably caused by general battle damage and caked-on dirt.

The MC took a pretty bad hit when he skidded into the Forerunner ship. That could have malfunctioned his shields. And this Trailer has no time placement... So this could be half way through the game, where it gets crazy and you have to play through the game with malfunctioning shields. hmmmmm. ha ha ha.

If he has shields, which he does, wouldn't the light relfect off the shields? and since he was standing in a desert location, wouldn't the color of the sand kind of reflect off the shields, giving the armor a brownish tint? It might just be a camo feature that blends the armor in with the surroundings

We must always fear evil men...
But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most
and that is the indifference...
of good men.

I think your reasoning is good, but you are trying too hard (like everyone here) to get information from the video. I think it has just been made to look less cartoony. That and the lighting.

I wanna tell you I really like your maps. I don't like the 4th one too much, but the first 3 look really cool. My fingers are crossed there will be some sort of map maker for halo 3.

who cares?
Apparently, these people do. *sighs*

Anyway, I think that the reason that the chief's armor seems a little more gold is because of the sand that might've rupped onto his armor, with the sun shining off of it. However, as I look at the forum banner closely, I can see that his armor seems almost the same as before.

Stop reading so much into things, guys.

Lets ignore science for now. Look at the camera placement. The angle it is at and the like, the armour would look slightly more gold because of the sun.

Ok I found the part in the Halo book "The Fall of Reach" where The MC's armor gets described on page 248. The Master Chief knew it was not his suit. His, after years of use, had dents and scratches in the alloy plates and the once iridescent green finish had dulled to a worn olive brown.

Sounds alot like the Suit shown in The Halo 3 Trailer... But you know what? The Armor that I just described from the book, HAD NO SHIELDS and was in use for years!!!

Halo 2's time-line was only a span of two or three weeks (at most.) Your talking about having the Brand new MJOLNIR armor go from Green to Olive-Brown (with working shields) in that short a time?

And Its not the reflection off the sand. I just don't get some people...

P.S. From the looks of things, I am the oldest member of this Forum (2004), all your profiles are a year or less old... Respect your elders... Thanks. : )

I played Halo CE when it first came out, I own all the books, I love the Halo universe... and it kills me so see over zealous kids talk like they know everything, JUST because they saw the Halo 3 trailer, and now they are all fans. Good for them, now tell me the firing rate of the
M41-LAAG...

Yeah.....

But still. That was an old armour. This armour has the Halo 2 design...
Not to mention, we have no idea what happened on earth or how long he was on it. Besides, it wasn't time that wore his armour, it was battle.

BTW, just because you are older than us in terms of forum usage DOES NOT mean that you know more. Just thought I'd clarify that. Thanks :)

No it doesn't. We know for a fact that the trailer does not take place at the beginning of the game because of something Frankie said in the weelky update about 2 weeks ago. He described playing a level that "took place even earlier" than the scene in the trailer. My guess is that Chief got new armor, and just like in Halo 2, that scene will be used as an in-game tutorial or game pad calibration.

There is no vacume that forms because of the shields for starters. Next it is written in the books that the Spartans early armor (pre Mk5) was worn and brownish in color due to wear and tear, much the same way the MC's armor looks now. It must also be said the new lighting system takes into account ambiant colors so the virtual sunlight is bounching off the sand and dirt of the ground causing a hazey golden glow to envelope everything. Me thinks if you factor in the battles he had on Delta Halo, the fighting he has done since his return leading up to that point in the trailer, the sunlight and simply the fact that dust and dirt as accumulated on his armor that those are the reasons his suit if brownish in color.

Also the 1/3 into the game part comes from a gamestop article in which Bungie representives made sure the press knew that what was show was realtime and took place roughly one third into the actual game.

linky here.

Just because his armour has shields, doesn't mean it protects him from the elements. When it rains, the rain doesn't land on his shield. If you watch the E3 demonstration for Halo 2 (that 9min long walkthrough of an Earth-based mission that did not make it into Halo 2), look closely at the scene where the Chief's ghost crashes as he narrowly makes it in between the emergency highway gates. He starts sliding on the floor and starts to create sparks. His shield was working, but somehow the Chief still managed to let the armour scrape on the ground. I think his shield only works against metallic and plasma projectiles, which leaves the possiblity open that his armour may have been exposed to the elements (i.e. the intense heat of the African desert, or maybe he fell through the atmosphere at one point).

Maybe the Chief got brand-spankin'-new nanocamo that changes its basic color in accordance to enviromental conditions, in the snow it's white, the jungle it's deep green, and in an arrid enviroment a basic olive drab. But I seriously doubt that. Olive just looks cooler than emerald green.

The armor could have been hit with debris/mud/stuff while the shields were down. Makes the most sense, in my opinion.
