Subject: An idea for the betterment of The Flood...

The Flood has suffered through a recent wave of attacks. They weren't spam or anything of that sort. Instead, they were numerous threads dedicated to the idea that one person's preference in music is better than all the rest. These threads were trying to pass off opinion as fact.

Now, this has always been something that popped up every once in a while in The Flood, but this time was much worse. Each thread quickly escalated into a flame-fest and opinion-bashing contest that rivaled even the worst policial "debate."

So, Budweiser Man 1 and I would like to make a proposal: put limits on musical discussion, just like those with politics and religion. This is a topic that is getting way too out of hand and is handled in a manner that is turning off a lot of people to the forums. A lot of people have not wanted to come to The Flood anymore because it had temporarily turned into a flame-fest.

And thanks goes out to keLp for bringing up the idea of posting this.

But Bungie can. They can 'Blam!' whatever they want.

The music topics are way out of hand. Not only are they worse than religious and political debates, there are so many of them that they could be considered spam. I agree.

Nobody's trying to limit musical discussion. We're just saying that the "my music is better than yours and you're a stupid poop-face for disagreeing so go cut yourself you emo rap moron" crap has gotta stop.

Well if it's not censoring you're looking for, then it's the mods to stop being so lenient.

Yeah, make EL a mod and he'll pull out his policeman's outfit and get tough with them.

*runs*.

But seriously, as long as it stays above the level of the average floodian's debate skills (i.e. You suck! no you suck!), and it stays a balanced comparison, then its all good and is a good reflection of the community, but once it does descend below that level, whip out Ye Olde Banstick.

I like to see and relate to the views and beliefs of others. I respect their say in things and am open to their differences. Except when their beliefs involve violently gutting other people like a clam.

The reason political and religious debate was banned was because it is by nature inflammatory. Sure, someone can fire a shot across someone elses' bow every once in awhile in a pirates versus ninjas thread, and wreak havoc; but this is generally not the case. When it comes to music, the topics are consistently flame wars. It's almost like a religion in itself, with different belief systems clashing for dominance. There is no room for logical debate, it is a matter of opinion that does not even deserve to be debated. It's like arguing over what color is the best. Inevitably, the responses from both sides equal up to a "because it's true" conclusion. And as we all know , the "truth" part can get stickier than a ball of molasses being rolled down a mountainside coated in super glue.

Exactly. I think everyone is really, really tired of that.

  • 06.04.2006 8:24 PM PDT

I really am sick of those threads. I don't need to tell anyone what music is the best and I sure as hell don't want anyone telling me what is the best. Unless, of course, I were to say something like "hey, does anyone know some good music?"

Topics that really don't have a sure answer, such as the best music genre or the best color, don't need to be debated because there's no way to prove you are correct. Thus the argument is in itself pointless.

I think a better option is just to ignore the people you are obnoxious. Or just have mod deal with bad behavior (specifically insulting and flame posts).

Because if you ban the expression of opinions on music, you should extend it to sports. And videogames. And foods. And cities. And movies and tv show.

We shouldn't bend to the least common denominator. Just ignore them. Pretend they don't exist. Seriously it works.

The "Windows > Mac" or "Mac > Windows" threads are just as bad, too.

All of this reminds me of the MLG debates... which Shishka put an end to swiftly, if I remember correctly.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

I remember saying something to this effect about a year ago in a thread (not a new thread). Casey, you stole my idea! ;-)

While I agree, since almost everyone in the flood is so religiously devoted to whatever stupid music they listen to that they can't see the value in any other form of music, such as Free Jazz or Avant-Garde Progressive Rock, to name a few random non-popular genres off the top of my head, there is a problem with it: You all have bad taste in music! ;-)

Ha...Ha...Ha... That wasn't funny. Oh well. I recommend everyone watch some of the videos on that site; they are quite funny. Much funnier than I.

Anyway, I think the topic should be banned because obviously people are not mature enough to handle it without flaming. However, "recommend me some music from genre X" threads are ok.

Quite frankly, I think the flood doesn't have enough spam. I think that moderators should just ignore that part of the forums. They created it for spam anyway. Like it says, "make your stupid posts here."

It says that. It doesn't mean that. Saying an meaning are entirely different things. Take it from me.

That's not musical discussion. That's trolling/flaming, which is already against the rules. I do agree that musical discussion does tend to lead to flaming, but then again, any topic can.

Maybe the moderators should pay more attention to those particular threads.

Just message a moderator if you feel a thread has gotten out of control: After the first few times people see flamers get banned, people calm down a little. =)

I've said too much.

But you have to admit, what I said was true. =] Rap is more dirty than rock. Fact. It's your choice whether you prefer listening to a swear evrey other sentance.

No it's not a fact. Like music preference, what is and isn't dirty is in the eyes of the listener. To be honest, I think music about cheating on girls and getting stoned is dirtier than people singing about prostitutes and "pimping"...

The simple fact is that there is almost no facts when it comes to music. It's all about what people's opinions are. And in the Flood, opinions do horrible things (just look at the Nintendo, 360, PS3 threads).

Gah! This thread is starting to turn into a flame-fest.

Actually, it's not really related to you, Piggyfool. You and I were at least debating over things that can be supported with more than just "(insert genre here) SUXX!!11," and we weren't really flaming each other.

There's a big difference between trying to prove a point and just flaming someone because they have a different opinion than you. That is what needs to stop. And since nearly all the debates over music center on opinion rather than fact, that's what needs to be controlled.

My perhaps sorry attempt at getting people to listen to this sort of thing can be seen HERE.

Far from it, actually. You shouldn't base your "facts" on stereotypical analyses.
