Many people on this forum have brought up the idea of a multiplayer map creator for Halo 3, however the lack of an appropriate or specific enough thread has not allowed for very detailed conversation on the topic.

Bungie set precedent for the possibility of a map creator in Halo 3 with the creation of Forge, the map editor that shipped with the last game in the Marathon series called Marathon Infinity. The inclusion of the editing tools (along with the release of the game's source code, but thats a different topic,) significantly lengthened the life of the Marathon games, which still have a faithful following to this day.

Extremely few map editing tools have enjoyed any success at all on video game consoles, perhaps the most notable being that for Far Cry: Instincts for the Xbox and Xbox 360.

Assuming that Bungie were to incorporate map editing tools into Halo 3, what features would you want to see? What sorts of restrictions in map use do you think would be appropriate (ranked/unranked matches)? What is your opinion on other map editors, such as the one for Far Cry? Why wouldn't you want a map editor?

Another idea would be that tools or objects that could be used in the creation of multiplayer maps for Halo 3 would be made available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. New structures or texture packs, or even further down the road even vehicles or weapons (which would probably mean that the maps would only be playable in unranked custom matches) could be made available for download in the marketplace and then used in your custom maps.

Maybe the market place could be used in another way. Xbox Live users could upload their mapmaker maps to the marketplace, and their friends and other users could downlaod them.

I wonder who would host them, though? Bungie would have to allot a crapload of webspace just to host peoples maps. The Far Cry games use a peer to peer system where when you join a game with a custom map, you automatically download it.

That would probably also clutter the marketplace pretty severely.

I think if bungie sees a really good map, they could put it in a playlist.

The Master Chief emerged from his code. After seeing his dynamically lit realtime shadow, he went back for 9 more months of development.

Behold the power of the Originals, the Gods Axeone-Neurone.

I think if Bungie is going to create a map creator then it should be part of Live Anywhere. So the editor would be a PC based software that could then be uploaded to Xbox Live.

Live Anywhere is an awesome idea! Just like the Forza demonstration. Except I'm not sure how well a map made on your cell phone would turn out, lol jk. I wonder how Microsoft plans on preventing hacking with this though. Still, great idea.
