None.
Ranking systems create an unspoken but completely visible categorical method of division that is unjust, unbalanced and grossly inaccurate in the measurement of superior standing and also plays negatively as class conflict arises between those of a higher position and those of a lower position. Where terminology like "noob" or "tryhard" are not only frequently used but celebrated and encouraged by the system. Where it is no longer the goal to find a fair and balanced match against opponents of similar caliber as you, but rather a higher standing that ultimately is unproductive to your life and doesn't produce any corporeal benefit. Where your high status is called into question by others and you are accused of manipulating the admittedly faulty system and you are ridiculed for your accomplishment.
Ranking system is cancerous to online multiplayer and only serves as a weak replayable value as the players delude themselves into thinking this has any real benefit to the game play experience. I don't know about you, but seeing a digital number go up does not make my experience any better, much like the useless ointment applied to cure the pain inflicted by the shard of glass within my urethra.
Then again, I liked Halo 3's ranking system, twas fun.
with what mild respect I have for your opinion, im going to have to disagree.
Online ranking systems have been around for ages, starting with early cpu games, and even before in arcade games in the form of leaderboards.
It doesnt create a caste like system, that would happen regardless. Its simply a means to measure yourself, and create more fair games for those who actually benefit from it.
And yes, seeing the number next to my name go up, and playing on said highest number to prove my dominance is indeed fun.
I was being facetious, as lightly lampshaded by my last sentence.
The fact that you took me seriously is kinda cute.
