arena - 50

yeah its tough for me personally to compare arena to any other system because of the lack of players in it. and also the fact that it is just one type of playlist.

i think it would be cool to see if halo 4 had an arena ranking system paired alongside halo 3's system where you could get ranked in different types of playlists.

  • 05.08.2012 6:33 PM PDT

I like Arena. It not only groups people into different categories (bottom/iron and top/onyx), but it also ranks each person within that division. I think it's cool people get a sense of how good they are in comparison with other players both within their rank, and outside it.

Hanger one I just shredded with the SMGs until ammo was out and I just threw 'nades like a boss while BRing.

My experience playing Cairo Station on Legendary

1-50. It made teamwork a necessity for ranking up. A good player is one that can work as a team, not just as a lone wolf.

Waypoint isn't pro-anything so much as they're just anti-intelligence.

Not Reach's system.

Last member of the i4Ni clan.

DiabloVixen + whoever else did Stats2V. That actually worked, had active mods, and busted stat abusers. Yeah, fans made a better program than you Bungie.

Halo: Reach is the beginning of a new age for gaming.
It proves that developers can get away with punishing their players instead of fixing their game....and yet the fanboys will still sing praises to them.

-blam!- all of you fanboys!

Halo CE's ranking system.

The one that never existed.

It really was the best one.

You know why?

Because the matter of skill levels was left up to the players discretion. And not some behind the scenes math equation that could never do the same job as simply allowing people who don't belong in a match with each other to quit the game without being banned over it.

What would all you losers do if the gaming industry as a whole decided to do away with all forms of stat tracking and achievement systems? I bet you'd all kill yourselves over it wouldn't ya?

Once upon a time, people used to play games....not for a number.

Or wait, let me correct that. It used to be enough to just dominate the current scoreboard for the current match. But then people needed to keep a history of it so they can jerk off to it later....

The feeling of obtaining the highest rank, then pooping on other people who have made it there, or lower than you, is very rewarding.

Not to mention when trueskill is done right it lets you have competitive matches, or matches you with people in your skill range the whole time.

Numbers make the game more fun.

  • 05.08.2012 11:07 PM PDT

None.

Ranking systems create an unspoken but completely visible categorical method of division that is unjust, unbalanced and grossly inaccurate in the measurement of superior standing and also plays negatively as class conflict arises between those of a higher position and those of a lower position. Where terminology like "noob" or "tryhard" are not only frequently used but celebrated and encouraged by the system. Where it is no longer the goal to find a fair and balanced match against opponents of similar caliber as you, but rather a higher standing that ultimately is unproductive to your life and doesn't produce any corporeal benefit. Where your high status is called into question by others and you are accused of manipulating the admittedly faulty system and you are ridiculed for your accomplishment.

Ranking system is cancerous to online multiplayer and only serves as a weak replayable value as the players delude themselves into thinking this has any real benefit to the game play experience. I don't know about you, but seeing a digital number go up does not make my experience any better, much like the useless ointment applied to cure the pain inflicted by the shard of glass within my urethra.

Then again, I liked Halo 3's ranking system, twas fun.

with what mild respect I have for your opinion, im going to have to disagree.

Online ranking systems have been around for ages, starting with early cpu games, and even before in arcade games in the form of leaderboards.

It doesnt create a caste like system, that would happen regardless. Its simply a means to measure yourself, and create more fair games for those who actually benefit from it.

And yes, seeing the number next to my name go up, and playing on said highest number to prove my dominance is indeed fun.

I was being facetious, as lightly lampshaded by my last sentence.

The fact that you took me seriously is kinda cute.
