Spartan II. John's race.
You do realize that Spartan generations are not races right? Spartan are all humans (duh) of any race (black, white, Asian, etc).

Spartan 2's.

Face it: they're basically the only "perfect" generation of Spartans.

Only generation who'se been trained from a young age.
Only generation to receive the best of the best in terms of equipment (MJOLNIR beats whatever S1's had, and SPI is clearly inferior to it...S4's might have something more advanced but we know nothing about them)
Only generation to have made a significant impact.
Only publically known generation and therefore a huge morale booster.

I mean, compare them to the rest:
S1's pretty much were just augmented soldiers.
S3's potentially could have been on equal footing with S2's...if they weren't send off to do suicide missions with sub par equipment (SPI) all the time.
S4's are nothing more than a rag tag group of ex S3's, and above average ODST's and Marines....sure: a pretty decent sample group to work with, but still not as thouroughly "bred" almost for war as S2's were.

Yes, there were moral issues with the S2 program (and with the S3 program as well). But when you look at which generation is the epitomy of the Spartan program, it is the S2 generation.

Which also makes them a lot cooler than that new group of S4's which come across as too forced into the story. Halo shouldn't rely on a constant stream of Spartans, and 343i should have rather spend time bringing back those groups/individuals of Spartans that were somewhere lost in canon (Grey Team, Black Team, Headhunters, Jun, some remainders of the S3 classes etc).

It's too early to judge on the SPARTAN IV's.

  • 05.13.2012 4:35 AM PDT

Well, you can judge them on the differences.

Spartan II's were trained as if they were grown men from the age of 6/7 or so.

The others probably only got their first combat training around 18 years old (the rare S3's not counting).

S2's saw more action before they reached their 18th birthday than most S4 candidates probably saw in their entire career.
However you put it, the fact still remains S2's are FAR more experienced than any other soldier out there.

To put it in the words of the CE boxart:
Bred for combat, build for war.

That does not apply to any non-native Spartan candidate.
So no matter how good they are as regular soldiers, and no matter how greatly those traits have been boosted by the MJOLNIR armor and the bio upgrades...they still lack that past that only the S2's have.

Apart from that, like I said before: I feel the inclusion of S4's is shoe horned in (even with the concept of Infinity being great) and that Halo doesn't need another set of Spartans.
The canon has so many open ends to Spartans like:
Halo Wars' Red Team, Jun, the other Headhunter packs, Grey Team, Black Team, other privately conscribed S3's like Noble Team/Headhunters are and other surviving S3's of Gamma Company for instance. Even Jorge, rehabilitated S2 washouts, or the possibility of some "prototypes" coming out of the cancelled Spartan 2 Class 2 program.
And the fact that S4's are a mix or Regular Joe's really doesn't help to sell their concept to me in any way. They're now set up as "weaker" than S2's from the get go, and to show they're cool as well they will probably get all sorts of forced "cool" actions attached to them.

Point being: I'd rather seen 343i bring back missing Spartans and use them to become a "new generation of Spartans".

DonVinzone1 please join the debate on why Spartan IIs are better than Spartan IVs in the "Who else thought up of Spartan IVs as volunteers?" thread.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Technically speaking, Spartan III's were wrecking Covenant forces by the time they were 12, without any sort of enhancing armor like the Spartan II's did.

The fact that they got the job done without MJOLNIR makes them better in my opinion.

S-II class because they are the best soldiers ever. Look at the training,MJOLNIR and so on. While the S-III were just throw away toys who no one other then Mendez and Kurt gave a -blam!- about comming back from a mission.

Also who the -blam!- boted S-IV? we know -blam!- all about them? how the hell can they be better then S-I,S-II,S-III?

The Spartan IV's Look Terrible, I honestly Perfure The II/III Over The IV's (off Topic But do you think We'll have Different Armour in Halo4?)

Jorge, and they were still unknown as the general public thought they were Spartan II's.

I want Halo 3 back how it was.

Probably III because they are much more military. And Gamma Company is awesome. IVs look interesting, and it's sad that they are now volunteers, but it was obvious they would be. Is are just highly trained soldiers with a few cybernetics. IIs are just boring, bland tanks. I like them, but I just feel something weird about them.

You are not going to talk to me about Spartan III's, I know pretty much anything about them. The general public (Army and civilians) just knew they were Spartans, but they didn't know they were Spartan III's as the program was still a secret (if civilians found out they had used orphans as suicide soldiers, they would riot against the UNSC/ONI).

True.
But then again: they were send into combat in massive groups of 300 or so. Imagine the damage caused by 300 S2's...and although not directly comparable: S2's were wrecking Insurrectionists at about the same age on large scale as well...without any form of SPI/MJOLNIR armor.
Also: weren't S3's drugged the hell out of to have them have higher pain acceptance etc? They basically were so pumped up they would perform more than they actually could do.

(And ONI still holds up that fairytale of how immoral Halsey was...).

But yes, what S3's did was incredibly impressive. I'm not going to argue about that. I just feel that when you put 1 S2 against 1 S3, the S2 would win hands down. Unless you get the rare S3's that do survive for longer time (Noble for instance), only then you get them on S2 level in my opinion.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

This may be kinda random and not really on topic that much...but does anybody else miss the idea of all the Spartans all being a green, deadly force? Referring to their armor here. I didn't really like the idea of Spartans customizing their armor. I liked it when they were all just green Spartans like this. That is just badass. They seem much more unified that way.

  • 05.14.2012 6:26 AM PDT

I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

I don't miss the idea because that's how it really would be. Noble Team would all be in standard OD MJOLNIR MkVI. The only reason they're so colorful and expressive is because they'd be boring and emotionless to the average gamer if they were all realistic.

Would there really be like 20 different kinds of MJOLNIR armor? No. Where would the funding come from for the development of such armors? Private corporations? Highly doubtful. Beyond all economic considerations, MJOLNIR is top secret stuff.

That was only Gamma Company. Alpha and Beta were regular Spartan III's with no cerebral alterations or drugs other than the usual for the Spartan programs. It'd be kind of unfair the generalize the Spartan III's like that. Plus, we really have no records on what operations and how Gamma Company performed apart from GLADIUS being KIA, KATANA MIA (Only 2 or 3 members found, the rest presumed dead) and SABERS performance on ONYX which was pretty damn good apart from their inexperience and problems with the drugs.

Tom and Lucy are testament enough to the fact that Spartan III's are as good or even better than SII's, had they been given the time to continue operating or had no been sent on suicide missions/survived them. Give those two MJOLNIR and I'd say they'd be almost an equal match to any Spartan II, putting aside the decades of experience in the field the Spartan II's have.
