Subject: Favorite generation of Spartan?

Technically speaking, Spartan III's were wrecking Covenant forces by the time they were 12, without any sort of enhancing armor like the Spartan II's did.

The fact that they got the job done without MJOLNIR makes them better in my opinion.

Also: weren't S3's drugged the hell out of to have them have higher pain acceptance etc? They basically were so pumped up they would perform more than they actually could do.

That was only Gamma Company. Alpha and Beta were regular Spartan III's with no cerebral alterations or drugs other than the usual for the Spartan programs. It'd be kind of unfair the generalize the Spartan III's like that. Plus, we really have no records on what operations and how Gamma Company performed apart from GLADIUS being KIA, KATANA MIA (Only 2 or 3 members found, the rest presumed dead) and SABERS performance on ONYX which was pretty damn good apart from their inexperience and problems with the drugs.

Tom and Lucy are testament enough to the fact that Spartan III's are as good or even better than SII's, had they been given the time to continue operating or had no been sent on suicide missions/survived them. Give those two MJOLNIR and I'd say they'd be almost an equal match to any Spartan II, putting aside the decades of experience in the field the Spartan II's have.

Ah yea, that's why I asked ;) Didn't remember if it was just Gamma or all of them, and didn't have the time to check it in the book.
About Gamma: well...we basically don't know anything about them. For all we know there might be quite a few of them left apart from those we know from the books (as we never learned how their suicide mission turned out).

And like I said: give S3's time and better armor and they can perform just as well as S2's in due time.
But I still stand at my point that if you were to send 300 S2's on the same missions as S3's were send on, they would perform better. And not just because of the MJOLNIR suit, but also because of years and years of more experience than S3's have.

S3's, well I guess you can basically see them as prototype S2's being thrown into battle WAY too early into their carreer. Same would have happened if they did the thing with S2's when they were 12-13 years old.
Thing is however, S3's seldomly outlived their missions...so judging them on their average performance I'd still rank them below S2's as they are, with the potential of being just as good if they weren't send of to their deaths with inferior armor.

Its gonna be hard for the S4's to live up to the accomplishments of the S3's and S2's but I believe that by the Final Halo Game they can do it...

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Well, not all of the missions the Spartan III's were sent on were suicide missions. The Insurrection of Mamore and something on New Constantinople (Alpha, I believe) were figures that told of the Spartan III's, even in their first class, ruthless efficency. Even watching the battle at the shipyard progress showed how well they performed. But after being cut off and fighting against a superior foe in numbers and technology for days, possibly more than a week, I can understand that the Spartan III's lost their cohesion brought on from pure exhaustion of perhaps some of the most intense fighting the war had seen up to that point.

Had you put Spartan II's on that rock with the same ammount in time of training, and I'm sure they would have lasted less than the SIII's did. Kurt said it himself, he had created a training regime that was more horrific and demanding than the original Spartan II training regime. Plus, the SIII's had a motivation to destroy the Covenant that the SII's didn't have.

I'm not trying to devaluate the Spartan II's, but taking into account the differences in program budgets and time, if we compensate, the Spartan III's could have been exactly the same as the SII's, but in less time and in greater numbers. Or even better than the Spartan II's. Just... we can clearly say the Spartan III's had extreme bad luck compared to the SII's... Cut off of exfiltration craft, overpowered by a simple overlooked aspect of intelligence/tactical service and orbital support that practically doomed Beta Company... Had they not had such bad luck, those missions could have been completed perfectly with less than 50% losses guaranteed.

IMO, of course ;)

Noble Team in particular. They erected a statue of them in Reach's largest city, however, New Alexandria it was. Could be said the Spartan III's are the heroes of Onyx. While the S-IIs are heroes of Earth (Blue Team). Master Chief the hero of Halo (Installations 04 and 00). Noble Team the heroes of Reach.

All Spartans are heroes in science fiction and so are the men and women in the UNSC who fight for humanity's survival.

So what if they put up a statue in Reach 50 years after? That was done with the purpose of giving the Legendary Edition statues a backstory within the Halo Universe in Halsey Journal. It's not an indicator of their abilities or prowess.

BUMP.

Really though it's been interesting to see the % of votes for Spartan IIs go down as more votes come in. Means people are voting for the other generations now.

S2's are great, and I love them. However as time goes on it seems their 'pedestal' just keeps getting jacked up for no reason.

People place them as better then anything else in the galaxy, can beat everything and laugh, etc.

I know not all, but the general just mass worship of S2's really just started me liking the S3's far more.

I mean, this topic alone proves how much people don't even pay attention to lore. If the S3's didn't do their missions, the Covenant advance would've been far faster, and far more devastating. The fact the S3's finished every objective and fought overwhelming odds the S2's NEVER faced until Reach, only with far less protective armor, but still made the enemy have to bring in reinforcements out the window in scope shows their skill.

The fact that the S2's, with far better equipment, and far more experience, when placed in the same situation did just as well shows something else. Battle of Reach, the ONE time S2's faced similar odds to the S3's 'suicide missions'. The result? S2's being almost utterly wiped out.

Difference? Mark V MJOLNIR armor vs SPI armor. and still it didn't save them. Place the S2's in the S3 suicide mission and you'd get the exact same results. Give the S3's the MJOLNIR Mark IV armor, and it might be a different story.

So yeah, I like the S3's because people underestimate them and that's the worst possible thing to do about a group.

Not at all, the statue given in the Legendary Edition is different to the monument to Noble Team.

Nobel Team still died though... and they were S3s with MJOLNIR Mark V, not IV, V. Or some kind of prototype at least.

I highly respect the Spartan 3's but the 2's are just my personal favourite. It's like girls. You like blonds, I like red heads sorta deal.

I mean on those missions. 300 spartan III's in Mark IV as opposed to SPI. You'd probably see different results.

Exactly, whereas the John-117 memorial is no more than a diorama, the Noble Team monument is a megalithic landmark.

Its funny how little people realize the sheer impact that Noble Team had on the war.

Particularly if they were full grown and not children.

心の中に弱い風が吹いています。

Spartan IIs. At the moment they're by far the most capable (and expensive) Spartan class yet.

52,000 kills in Halo 2 and more legendary playthroughs in CE than you can imagine. I am truly a God.

Don't do anything you wouldn't want to have to explain to paramedics. Trust me, I'm a pilot.

My favourite generation is the S-III. They're incredibly underrated, though they are still highly trained, highly effective soldiers. I think that if MJOLNIR armor didn't cost as much as it did, thus preventing the vast majority of S-IIIs from ever using it, I think they would be on par with S-IIs in terms of effectiveness.

Its funny how everyone immediately jumps the gun on saying Spartan IV's are the weakest of the Spartans. People: The Game Isn't Even OUT YET.

I personally think they're going to have the best qualities of each generation, in essence, the 'perfect soldier'.

EDIT: And didn't Halsey write in her journal somewhere that she was working on a variant of MJOLNIR far more devastating and destructive than any of its predecessors? It was called Mark VII and it could actually manipulate barrier field technology. For example: focusing all the energy of the energy field into a single punch, coated in energy fields.

I'm going to assume you are agreeing with me that we shouldn't be really saying S4's are the best/worst until the game comes out/more information is granted.

As for the armor... That was all theorys, nothing in solid practice by that time. And... it's been confirmed SIV's are using some "lightweight variant" of MJOLNIR.

Don't really know what to think of Spartan IV's, mainly the ones who weren't adopted into the program (S-II's and S-III's specifically).
