This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect
:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Technically speaking, Spartan III's were wrecking Covenant forces by the time they were 12, without any sort of enhancing armor like the Spartan II's did.
The fact that they got the job done without MJOLNIR makes them better in my opinion.
Also: weren't S3's drugged the hell out of to have them have higher pain acceptance etc? They basically were so pumped up they would perform more than they actually could do.
That was only Gamma Company. Alpha and Beta were regular Spartan III's with no cerebral alterations or drugs other than the usual for the Spartan programs. It'd be kind of unfair the generalize the Spartan III's like that. Plus, we really have no records on what operations and how Gamma Company performed apart from GLADIUS being KIA, KATANA MIA (Only 2 or 3 members found, the rest presumed dead) and SABERS performance on ONYX which was pretty damn good apart from their inexperience and problems with the drugs.
Tom and Lucy are testament enough to the fact that Spartan III's are as good or even better than SII's, had they been given the time to continue operating or had no been sent on suicide missions/survived them. Give those two MJOLNIR and I'd say they'd be almost an equal match to any Spartan II, putting aside the decades of experience in the field the Spartan II's have.
S3's, well I guess you can basically see them as prototype S2's being thrown into battle WAY too early into their carreer. Same would have happened if they did the thing with S2's when they were 12-13 years old.
Well, not all of the missions the Spartan III's were sent on were suicide missions. The Insurrection of Mamore and something on New Constantinople (Alpha, I believe) were figures that told of the Spartan III's, even in their first class, ruthless efficency. Even watching the battle at the shipyard progress showed how well they performed. But after being cut off and fighting against a superior foe in numbers and technology for days, possibly more than a week, I can understand that the Spartan III's lost their cohesion brought on from pure exhaustion of perhaps some of the most intense fighting the war had seen up to that point.
Had you put Spartan II's on that rock with the same ammount in time of training, and I'm sure they would have lasted less than the SIII's did. Kurt said it himself, he had created a training regime that was more horrific and demanding than the original Spartan II training regime. Plus, the SIII's had a motivation to destroy the Covenant that the SII's didn't have.
I'm not trying to devaluate the Spartan II's, but taking into account the differences in program budgets and time, if we compensate, the Spartan III's could have been exactly the same as the SII's, but in less time and in greater numbers. Or even better than the Spartan II's. Just... we can clearly say the Spartan III's had extreme bad luck compared to the SII's... Cut off of exfiltration craft, overpowered by a simple overlooked aspect of intelligence/tactical service and orbital support that practically doomed Beta Company... Had they not had such bad luck, those missions could have been completed perfectly with less than 50% losses guaranteed.
IMO, of course ;)
