Subject: Which is your favorite short story from Halo Evolutions?

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Listen guys, I know this has been done before. No need to tell me. The forum, however, has gotten painfully slow and there's rarely any decent topics anymore. Not saying this is a much better topic, but I digress. Inspiration for this thread comes from here. Reply, discuss, have some fun in that thread too.

Anyway, to the actual topic -- The Mona Lisa has to be my favorite short story in Evolutions. It really grabbed me by the balls and made me not want to put the book down. The way the Flood is portrayed in that short story is truly superb. I'm not saying this to sound like a tough guy, but the Flood never scared me in the games. Not the tiniest bit. In the Mona Lisa, however, they were some scary, SOBs. I greatly admired and was very fond of how the author wrote the Flood.

Aside from the Flood, another thing worth mentioning was the characters. Henry and the prisoner, the spook, the Marine squad, that b1tchy A.I...All fairly well-done characters that you were drawn to and cared about.

The whole element of mystery was also a key factor of what drove me to keep reading. Overall, I could say a lot about this story, but I think I got my point across.

Now, what is yours? And why?

Still using a pump-action shotgun over 500 years in the future I see.

omg not realistic stop game production plz

Dirt was thoroughly enjoyable and engaging for me to read. Gage Yevgenny actually stirred me a little; for a short story, one really felt like they'd accompanied Gage's entire life and everything he'd lost in 25 years of bloody, numbing genocide.

Add to that his own willing to sacrifice himself to eliminate both the Covenant and the rogue ODSTs, and a cameo appearance by the Rookie for a satisfying ending, I felt like that story gripped me very well.

It's not just dirt. It's our dirt, damnit!

Loved the entire thing, Nylund's best work in the Halo universe in my opinion. If that's what he can write like now as standard, bring him back to work on a new novel.

Hi seal sniper :)

How are you man?

About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

I don't think the Mona Lisa can be counted as a choice tbh. It's not even a "short" story, its over 150 pages. It could be it's on novel.

That said, even though I thought they were all kinda meh, I liked the Admiral Cole one, because space battles.

The one with Spartan Black was the worst, read like a bad fan fiction.

Uhh, no. I'm not even sure 150 pages could be considered a novella.

Haven't heard from any of DRS's guys for quite awhile. Wish we could all hang out on H3 again sometime.

For sure, man. Just PM me anytime. :)

We should probably keep on topic, though. :p What's your favorite Evolutions short story?

I was actually just browsing through the forums and noticed your name, I've yet to read any of the Evolutions as the only stories I've read were First strike, the flood and The fall of reach.

My favorite of those three being First strike.

I also at the time had a littleboycrush on a fictional character ; Linda.

The Mona Lisa was pretty amazing, I must say.

I also liked the story where the Elite shipmaster returns to the human world of Kholo. Lots to think about, and it provides some insight as to what happened to the Covenant client species after the war.

The story with Brutes eating humans was kinda cool as well.

Oh, and can anyone explain to me what Soma the painter was about?

Human Weakness by Karen Traviss. Reading that gave me high hopes for Glasslands...then she betrayed me.

Oh, I forgot about Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss. That left me disgusted, but in a good way (if that makes sense). It was a good story, but the brutality of the...brutes (no pun intended) was appalling. Not very surprising, although I didn't know they ate humans.

The Return also mentions they ate slain Elites that they killed during the Great Schism.

Interesting. If Brutes were still in the games, I would have liked to seen that kind of brutality. I should rephrase...I don't want to watch a Brute chow down on a human or Elite, but it would've been nice to see them be more...beastly. More uncivilized and crazy. I guess that's quite a challenge since it is a video game, after all. But, still.

Gears managed to pull off a lot of gore. And Halo is rated M anyways, so why not?

I'm not saying put MASSIVE amounts of gore in. Showing a Brute eating an Elite though wouldn't be that hard to put in the game... I think.

Yeah, Dirt was probably my second favorite short story. ODSTs are my favorite type of soldier in the Haloverse, so it was especially appealing. The only part I didn't really like about it was the whole heist scenario and whatnot. I would have liked it to focus more toward fighting the Covenant or Flood or something. It was still a great story.

Eh I liked Dirt and I liked the heist. It's more realistic. Humanity will always be at odds with each other. It's just part of being human.
