Halo Reach or the Fall of Reach. I know people say that game<book, but I think it's down to personal opinion.
I see the book as the real thing because it makes more sense and works out much better.

Regardless of your question, you cannot say that the identity of the True Halo Canon is up to personal opinion - it is NOT and it is the same for everybody.

The Fall of Reach represents the most accurate account of the Battle of Reach as it exists in the True Halo Canon. Halo Reach is a ONI data package (read the note in the Heroic Edition) and is therefore itself a canonical, in-story artifact. Any intent and manifest discrepancy between Halo Reach and the Fall of Reach indicates that ONI is either willfully inaccurate (propaganda), or doesn't have the facts straight.

There is no contradiction, but there certainly is no such thing as "canon is whatever your personal opinion says".

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Cannon? I like cannons.

I prefer the Fall of Reach as canon rather than Halo: Reach.

Cool.

Games always trump books so wether we like it or not, Halo Reach is canon and part of what happened on Reach.

I read the book while playing the campaign on legendary. It was a cool experience. Whenever I wasn't playing, I was reading about the Fall of Reach.

Both. 343i AND Bungie regard them both as canon.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Both are canon. However FoR is my personal preference. Anything interfering with that is acknowledge and unless certain elements are portrayed better, I'm content with FoR with very minimal changes from H:R.

But like I said earlier, as of now both are canon. It's up for 343i to decide. But it doesn't mean you have to go along with it.

I can come up with my own story for the Halo Universe in my head. Then, no matter how different that is from official canon, I can consider it as canon. We have free will, we follow through a story, make decisions what makes sense and what doesn't and form our own opinion.

While both products are certainly official canon, the consumers are free to consider both and in case they conflict, decide by themselves which they believe is the more logical option. You can't change my opinion that Fall of Reach is more canon than Reach. Regardless of what you say, I can still disregard the whole game and there is nothing you can do about it. Therefore what's canon and what isn't is completely up to the consumer to decide, regardless of what the official canon says.

Your specific opinion about the book is correct; however people's personal opinions - which they do indeed have a right to - can not define the immutable "Halo Canon", rather they can only attempt to come closer and closer to it. There's a thread on this forum entitled "Summa Canonica" which goes into insane detail about this argument. Also, you seem to have ignored my way of rationalizing Halo Reach's "inconsistencies" above - it is not a direct manifestation of the Battle of Reach (like how The Fall of Reach is) - it is a manifestation of an ONI artifact, which may have been propaganda.

As the true cannon?

Well in WWII The Germans built huge rail mounted artillery cannons. I see these as the true cannons.

Do you know 343i filled in some of the gaps between the book and game a while back?

@spaboolly

As some others have said, I feel the sequence of events in The Fall of Reach makes more sense. I respect them both as "canon," but my personal preference is for the book.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

I've always loved the Super MAC cannons.

Straight from the wandering mind of Watson 203

Bungie/343 have attempted to make both canon fit together, it was on the wiki's. I can't remember what it was exactly, but it was some comunique's between two admirals. I believe one was Stanforth, but I'm not too sure. They're called data pads or something, but not the ones you can find in Reach.
Maybe somebody else will know what I mean.
