I was looking at the back of my Halo 2 Vol. 2 soundtrack today when I decided I had no idea what "Thermopylae" meant (Part II of the Finale Suite is called Thermopylae Soon.) So I looked it up. What I got was: "A battle where Spartan king Leonidas (also part of a suite on the soundtrack) and his army were utterly annihilated by Persians who wanted to take over Greece." Now if you ask me, that sounds like a giveaway. Any thoughts on this? Sorry if this has been posted before or is too obvious for you.

A little off topic but not really, for those who don't have the soundtrack Leonidas is the music that plays when you're on the gondolas on the level Regret and Thermopylae Soon plays when the Forerunner ship exits slipspace near Earth and Master Chief says "Sir, Finishing this Fight."

ok...........

you are wrong, at Thermopylae 1000 spartans took on 1 million persians. the spartans never had a chance but they fought to the very end and the persians had huge casualties, not sure off hand. once the they actually made it into the spartan stronghold they were still getting slaughtered attacking head on so for a few days they didnt attack and they found a back way in to surround them, they did and still they got killed when they tried to attack them, so in the end they just stood back with arrows and shot them till all the spartans were dead.

Thanks. What I'm trying to get at, if it's not obvious from the e3 trailer thing, is that if the "Persians" are the Covenant versus the Spartans (I think that's obvious enough,) and in the battle of Thermpylae the Spartans lost to the "Persians," we may know that the end of humankind (and possibly all sentient hosts for the Flood) is truly at hand.

Did that make any more sense?

I am...whimsical today.

No it was 300 Spartans I believe. They held the pass at Thermoplye long enough for the rest of the Greeks to get organized enough to fight the Persians. They also had allies guarding a path around Thermoplye, in case the Persians found it. The path was given away by (either a goatherd, or a defected Spartan, I can't remember) and the allies guarding it were killed. The Persians came round from behind and killed the Spartans.

Their sacrifice meant that Greece prevailed later on...someting to think about maybe?

Did any one else see '300 Spartans' on telly a few days ago XD HILARIOUS acting

Actually, there were only 300 Spartans commanded by Leonidas at Thermopylae, and they were supported by more Greeks from other city-states. The Persian force wasn't all just Persian, but made up of several different peoples (sounds like the Covenant, doesn't it), like Russians and Turks. The warriors held off the Persians quite well for several days, until a Greek traitor (Ackerson?) showed the the enemy a way around the pass. Knowing that the fight was to be lost, Leonidas told the other Greeks to retreat. He and his Spartans stayed behind. All of them were killed, but they managed to take a hell of a lot of Persians with them. The news of their sacrifice gave a huge morale boost to the Greeks, and helped them to win several more battles. Another group of Spartans eventually defeated the Persians permanently, ending the war. I'm pretty sure this is correct, since I almost memorized it in my History book. It also helps that it was on page 117.

You are totally correct here.

Bungie have clearly taken a lot on board from the legendary Spartans of ancient Greece. For instance, it was normal procedure for the young children of a Spartan community to take leave of their home at age 7 to begin their military training.

The Spartans did not qualify as fully trained soldiers until they were 21; making them the best trained, best disciplined and most fearsome warriors of the world at that time. Nothing could surpass a Spartan's dedication to his homeland, his training and his customs.

Spartans were not just physical brutes; though to be sure they were trained to tolerate extreme pain and discomfort (children would often be trained in hand to hand combat with real swords from an early age... death, gore and suffering would have been a familiar sight by their early teens). They were also master tacticians and strategists... again... the infamous battle at the 'gates of fire' goes to prove this.

Bungie have clearly been influenced by much of this mysterious and ancient culture... and who could argue with them for doing so?

There's a film coming out this year called 300. It is an adaptation of a superb Frank Miller graphic novel that covers the story being mentioned here. Maybe some of you guys would be interested....

That's sounds like a very interesting movie. And another similarity between the Spartans. The reason Sparta focused so heavily on military was to prevent rebellions. Just like the Spartans from Halo.

In case anybody is interested, The Battle Of Thermopylae was the first in class lesson that the Spartans had after their forced indoctrination into the Spartan program. It was taught by a class three AI called Deja. I am not a dork for knowing this, seriously.

Oh, I remember Deja teaching them this in The Fall of Reach but I didn't know/remember it was about Thermopylae. Lol so I guess it isn't the first time it's been mentioned.
